49ers Re-Sign ‘Underrated’ Starter: Report

DJ Jones

The 49ers started making deals early Wednesday morning while everyone was asleep, signing All-Pro center Alex Mack to a deal and re-signing highly touted offensive lineman Trent Williams to a historic contract extension.

But, they didn’t stop there. The Niners looked to their defensive line and re-signed defensive tackle D.J. Jones to a one-year deal, per Ian Rapoport who also noted that Jones is an “underrated starter” for San Francisco.

Jones, 26, was drafted out of Ole Miss in the sixth-round of the 2017 NFL Draft. Just this past season, Jones recorded 20 tackles, a career-high three sacks, and a pass defense through 14 games.

Through his four seasons in the league, Jones has totaled 70 tackles, five sacks, two passes defended, and a forced fumble.

Keeping Jones in the lineup is a good move as he is a solid defensive lineman with quick feet and burst that allows him to be extremely disruptive on both run and pass plays. He’s the kind of guy any team would want in their defensive rotation.

 49ers Other Free Agency Signings

Offensive tackle Trent Williams and the Niners agreed to a monster deal this morning when the eight-time Pro Bowler signed a six-year contract extension worth $138.06 million, which includes $55.1 million and a $30.1 million signing bonus. The deal makes Williams the highest-paid offensive lineman in NFL history.

The Niners reportedly had a deal on the table for Williams but he was flirting around with other teams, including the Kansas City Chiefs, CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones reported. Williams started 14 games, missing two games due to COVID-19 and then the final game of the season because of an elbow injury.

Along with Williams, Atlanta Falcons’ middleman Alex Mack joined the fun and signed a deal with the Niners which reunites him with head coach Kyle Shanahan. Shanahan coach Mack at the Cleveland Browns and Atlanta Falcons as an offensive coordinator.

Mack is a reliable center and missed just two games this past season because of a concussion, however, he had not missed a game since 2014 prior to that. The six-time Pro Bowler played his collegiate career at Cal and will return to the Bay Area where it all started for him.

Niners’ Free Agency Signings Continued

The Niners also added some help to their pass rush by signing edge rusher Samson Ebukam to a two-year deal worth $12 million, which could reach $13.5 million with incentives. The former Rams’ edge started 14 games in 2020 and racked up 4.5 sacks, three tackles for loss, seven quarterback hits, a forced fumble, and a pass breakup.

The same day, San Fransisco made a deal with cornerback Jason Verrett. The new deal is worth $5.5 million-plus incentives that could take it to $6.5 million if he makes the Pro Bowl. Verrett appeared in 13 games last season, which happened to be the most he’s played since 2015.

But the first move the Niners made was keeping fullback Kyle Juszczyk on a 5-year deal worth $27 million bucks with $10 million guaranteed. In 2020, Juszczyk had 17 carries for 64 yards and two touchdowns and added 19 receptions for 202 yards and four scores in the air.

March 17th, 4 PM ET marked the official time that these Niners can officially start inking their new deals.
