The Cleveland Browns have requested permission to interview Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator Aden Durde for their vacant head coaching job, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

It’s the Browns’ latest early move after the team fired Kevin Stefanski on Monday, January 5, officially kicking off a new coaching search. And while it’s only an interview request right now – not a hire – Durde’s name popping up this quickly is a signal Cleveland may be looking for a culture-changing leader, not just a play-caller.

One immediate, practical wrinkle: NFL interview rules can dictate the pace. Because Seattle earned a first-round bye, Seahawks assistants are eligible for virtual interviews starting Tuesday (Jan. 6), with in-person interviews beginning Jan. 19 under the league’s timeline.

Key details (quick scan)

  • What happened: Browns requested permission to interview Aden Durde
  • Why now: Browns are replacing Kevin Stefanski after his firing Jan. 5
  • Timing: Seahawks assistants can do virtual interviews this week; in-person window opens Jan. 19
  • Context: Seahawks hired Durde as DC in February 2024 after his Cowboys stint. He’s largely been credited as the reason defensive star DeMarcus Lawrence chose to sign with the Seahawks.

Why Aden Durde Is Suddenly a Browns Target

Durde is in his first NFL defensive coordinator job in Seattle, but he arrived with a reputation as a builder, especially up front. The Seahawks hired him in 2024, after he spent 2021- 23 as the Dallas Cowboys’ defensive line coach.

On top of the resume, Cleveland is also getting a “people” recommendation from the Seahawks’ coverage ecosystem. Seahawks analyst Brian Nemhauser described Durde to Browns fans as an “absolute stud,” pointing to his leadership presence, his reputation with players (including former Cowboys), and his hands-on work with pass rush and edge technique. (Nemhauser also flagged the main question: Durde hasn’t been the primary regular-season play-caller in Seattle.)

That last part matters in a head-coach search, because teams are often trying to separate great teacher/leader from proven Sunday driver.

What It Means for the Browns (and the Timeline to Watch)

Cleveland’s request doesn’t guarantee an interview will happen immediately, but the process is now in motion, and the calendar matters as much as the candidate list.

Because Seattle has a bye, the Browns can pursue an initial virtual conversation with Durde right away under league guidelines. If mutual interest grows, the next escalation point becomes the in-person window starting Jan. 19, assuming Seattle is still alive in the postseason, which can further complicate scheduling.

The Browns will also need to navigate the league’s hiring requirements, including Rooney Rule-related procedures that govern head coach searches.

For Cleveland, the “why Durde?” pitch is straightforward: a defensive leader with a strong reputation for connecting with players, plus a background that includes high-profile work with the Cowboys’ front. For Durde, the opportunity is obvious too, head coach openings don’t come around often, and interview cycles move fast once they start.

Durde also fits the profile of an “ascendant” defensive hire, young enough to be a long-term bet, but seasoned enough to have coached under big-stage pressure in Dallas. If Cleveland is prioritizing culture and accountability after the Stefanski move, insiders linking the Browns to an “absolute stud” candidate this early is the kind of signal that can reshape the entire short list quickly.
