The Seattle Seahawks are moving full steam ahead on their Super Bowl defense, but are still taking time to reflect back on their historic season — and the accomplishments of star receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba.
The team took to social media on Saturday to share an accomplishment from their breakout star, who already made history on the team’s Super Bowl-winning season. After earning plenty of national honors, Smith-Njigba is now getting some love on a local level as well.
Jaxon Smith-Njigba Earns Praise from Seattle Media
The Seahawks took to social media to share the results of the 91st Seattle Sports Star Awards, which shared some love for their season. The team won the “Sports Story Of The Year” for their Super Bowl victory, while Smith-Njigba took home the “Men’s Sports Star Of The Year” honors.
The Seahawks have already shared love for their star receiver earlier this offseason. The team praised him for a second consecutive season topping 1,000 yards, noting that he built on his 1,138-yard season in 2024 by racking up 1,973 yards last year.
“Encore,” the team shared in a post on X.
Smith-Njigba added another 17 receptions for 199 yards and a team-leading two touchdowns in their three postseason wins.
Time for Jaxon Smith-Njigba to Cash In
The Seahawks face a big decision on their star wide receiver, who is eligible for a contract extension. The All-Pro pass-catcher said he isn’t stressing over when a deal will come together, saying he trusts the team and is focused only on returning to defend their Super Bowl title.
“I’m not really too pressed right now to get it done,” Smith-Njigba said. “I know my time is coming, and when we get it done, it’s going to be a great deal. God’s timing is perfect timing. So whenever that may come, we’ll be ready for it.
“I think I deserve to be the highest paid in my position, and what I give to the game and my community. I give it my all, and I think that’s worth a lot more. I would play this game for free. I love this game so much, but you don’t have to, and I’m learning to be a good businessman and we need that check at the end of the day.”
The Seahawks could lean on their star wide receiver more in the coming season after losing another important part of the offense. Running back Kenneth Walker III, fresh off his MVP performance in the Super Bowl win, left in free agency to join the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Seahawks did move quickly to keep another important part of their offense, re-signing Rashid Shaheed after he helped the team to a Super Bowl win. The move earned some praise from Seahawks legend Richard Sherman.
“I love this move,” Sherman said on “The Richard Sherman Podcast.” “I wasn’t sure this move would happen because of the guys that they have on the horizon to pay.
“I thought Shaheed’s market would be right where they paid him, about $17 million a year, but I wasn’t sure the Seahawks would be willing to make that move with everything they already have invested in that offense. They throw the money where the money is.”
