Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald just got a major national nod heading into the biggest game of his young career.
In a new ESPN ranking of the best NFL head coaching hires of the past five years, analyst Bill Barnwell slotted Macdonald at No. 3 overall, placing him one spot ahead of New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel (No. 4), with the two set to meet in Super Bowl LX on Feb. 8, 2026.
Bill Barnwell Puts Seahawks’ Mike Macdonald in Elite Company
Barnwell ranked 37 full-time head coach hires over the past five years and emphasized more than just wins and playoff runs. His criteria included evidence of real coaching impact: fourth-down and late-game management, player development, free-agent fit, and whether draft picks exceeded expectations.
At the very top of his list: Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell (No. 1) and Philadelphia Eagles coach Nick Sirianni (No. 2). Right behind them was Macdonald, already in rare air after only two seasons leading Seattle.
Barnwell’s central point for teams currently cycling through head-coach searches was simple: Super Bowl LX is the blueprint for how fast a franchise can flip if it nails the hire. Seattle’s rise under Macdonald – and New England’s immediate surge under Vrabel – was his proof.
Why Barnwell Thinks Macdonald’s Seahawks Turnaround Is Real
Barnwell’s argument for Macdonald was rooted in what Seahawks fans have felt all season: Seattle’s defense has become the team’s identity, and it happened fast.
Barnwell credited Macdonald with building one of the NFL’s best defenses in short order – similar to what he did as a coordinator in Baltimore – and highlighted how Seattle has elevated both stars and lesser-known contributors along the way.
He also noted Macdonald’s ability to put players in the right roles, pointing to improvement across the unit and the way Seattle has managed to get “enough” offense this season to reach the Super Bowl.
The one critique Barnwell raised: Macdonald can be conservative on fourth down, but he framed it as understandable given how much Macdonald trusts his defense.
What It Means for Seahawks vs. Patriots in Super Bowl LX
Seattle officially punched its ticket to Super Bowl LX by beating the Los Angeles Rams 31-27 in Sunday’s NFC Championship Game, setting up a Seahawks-Patriots title matchup on Feb. 8, 2026. Fans searching for Seahawks Super Bowl date/time should note kickoff is shortly after 6:30 p.m. ET at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California. The game will air on NBC (also Telemundo/Universo) and will be streamed on Peacock. Adding extra juice: this is Seattle’s first Super Bowl appearance since 2015, while New England is back on the sport’s biggest stage in a major way.
The Barnwell ranking is fun fuel for a Super Bowl week debate, but it also frames the matchup cleanly: two defensive-minded head coaches, both hired for leadership and identity, both already validated by a championship-game run.
Vrabel came in at No. 4 largely because of the Patriots’ instant turnaround and the way he stamped an imprint in Year 1, per Barnwell, though the ESPN piece also flagged context like roster upgrades and schedule.
Now it’s settled on the field. The Seahawks and Patriots meet Sunday, Feb. 8, 2026, with the league title on the line.
