Baker Mayfield Sends Clear Message After Devastating Loss to Falcons

Baker Mayfield didn’t dodge responsibility after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers suffered a crushing 29-28 loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Thursday night.

As NewsWeek noted, instead of pointing to defensive breakdowns or tons of missed opportunities, the Buccaneers QB made it clear the blame starts with him.

“It falls on my shoulders,” Mayfield said after the game, referencing his interception and a missed third-down connection with Emeka Egbuka

“Can’t turn the ball over. Gotta hit Mek in stride. We have to be better on offense, and it comes down to how I play.”

The message was clear and direct and Mayfield knows how important winning this game was and what it meant for the team’s season.

“This one is going to haunt me.”

Buccaneers Let 28-14 Lead Slip Away

The loss stung even more given how firmly Tampa Bay appeared to be in control.

After trailing 14-13 at halftime, the Buccaneers came out sharp in the second half.

They scored two unanswered touchdowns, building a 28-14 lead with under 10 minutes to play.

Kirk Cousins marched down the field as the Falcons scored two touchdowns in the next seven minutes to cut the Bucs lead to 28-26.

The Bucs defense could not stop Bijan Robinson or Kyle Pitts all night as the two combined for 341 yards and four touchdowns.

Then, with just over two minutes to go, Baker Mayfield missed Emeka Egbuka over the middle on a throw that would have put the game away.

Instead, the Bucs had to punt.

To make matters even worse, the Falcons faced a 3rd-and-28 on their final drive but the Bucs defense allowed two passes to Pitts and Stills to convert.

Zane Gonzalez ultimately sealed the collapse with a 43-yard field goal as time expired.

There were countless breakdowns for the Buccaneers, and it ended up being one of the most stunning comebacks of the season.

A Season-Changing Loss for Tampa Bay

Beyond the scoreboard, the loss carried massive playoff implications.

Tampa Bay dropped to 7-7 and now finds itself on the outside of the NFC playoff picture.

According to NFL.com projections, the Buccaneers’ postseason odds sit at roughly 53 percent, a noticeable hit after what could have been a momentum-building win.

More concerning is the divisional landscape.

The Carolina Panthers now sit atop the NFC South, and Tampa Bay’s upcoming two-game stretch against Carolina has become season-defining.

If the Buccaneers and Panthers split those matchups, Carolina would be in position to win the division outright unless Carolina loses another game that isn’t to the Bucs.

Mayfield’s accountability resonated, but the reality remains harsh.

Blowing a two touchdown fourth-quarter lead to a division rival may ultimately be the moment that reshaped the Bucs’ season.

With three games left, Tampa Bay has little margin for error, and the weight of that collapse could be monumental down the line.

The only good news is that the Bucs still control their playoff destiny as they play the Panthers twice in their last three games to end the season.

They will most likely have to win both of those games to win the division and make the playoffs.
