Emeka Egbuka has been a big talking point, both in the media and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers organization, to begin training camp.
If you ask general manager Jason Licht and his scouting team, they’ve known since before the draft that the hype was fully warranted.
The Buccaneers’ YouTube channel posted an episode of its behind-the-scenes series “In the Current” showing footage of pre-draft interviews, as well as conversations surrounding each of Tampa Bay’s selections.
Taking Egbuka with the 19th overall pick was an easy decision for the Buccaneers’ front office.
“I can’t remember a player that we had such consensus on, across the board,” director of college scouting Tony Hardie said in the video. “The grades were almost exactly the same, from person to person.”
Now, over a week through training camp, the rookie wide receiver has seemed to live up to expectations, with reports claiming he has truly hit the ground running to begin his career in Tampa Bay.
After winning a National Championship in his final year of college, Egbuka makes the jump to the NFL with the characteristics of a winner.
“Super Bowl. End of the game. Who do I want on the field with me? As a receiver, [Egbuka] embodies all those things,” assistant general manager Mike Greenberg said.
Emeka Egbuka’s Comparisons to Teammate Chris Godwin
One of the biggest compliments given to the 22-year-old was how much the organization viewed him as a Chris Godwin-like player.
Through the first eight years of his career, Godwin has been just about all that the Buccaneers could’ve asked for. The team has found a lot of success with his skill set at receiver, and hopes to do the same with their new rookie.
“The comparisons [to Godwin] were kind of eerie to me,” senior personnel executive Byron Kiefer said. “Obviously, we’re all very happy with having Chris Godwin on our team, so I think whenever you can add a player who we think is that caliber of talent, mixed with the football makeup and personal character, it’s a no-brainer.”
Although Godwin has been stuck on the sideline to begin training camp, the veteran wideout has taken the time to take Egbuka under his wing.
The similarities are even jumping out to other players within the Buccaneers’ wide receiver room, with Sterling Shepard mentioning how comparable the two are.
What the High Praise Means for the 2025 Season and Beyond

Being a first-round selection comes with a built-in set of expectations for any player. For Egbuka, the expectation may be even higher, given how confident Tampa Bay is in his abilities.
Godwin’s injury status should give the rookie a larger role at least to begin the regular season. Reports show that despite Godwin being “exactly where” the team wants him in his rehabilitation, his status for Week 1 is still unknown at this point.
Baker Mayfield will be looking for someone to fill the shoes of one of his favorite targets, should Godwin not be able to suit up. Egbuka showed during his time with the Ohio State Buckeyes that he’s capable of filling a large role, including two seasons with over 1,000 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns.
When asked about his goals for his rookie season, Egbuka said, “I’m looking to do whatever’s asked of me, to be honest. Playing in the NFL is just such a lifelong dream. It’s [going to] be hard to [get] mad at getting on the field anyway that I can.”
