New Quarterback Reacts to Bucs Call [Watch]

Getty Tampa Bay took Kyle Trask in the NFL Draft as a potential successor to Tom Brady.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers draft pick quarterback Kyle Trask knew what was coming when he saw his phone light up.

“I was super excited when I saw that Tampa, Florida, number call me,” Trask said during a press conference after the Bucs selected him with the 64th pick in the NFL Draft.

The Bucs shared the life-changing phone call for Trask with general manager Jason Licht and head coach Bruce Arians.

“Do you know why I’m calling,” Licht asked.

“I hope I know why you’re calling,” Trask said.

“You’re going to be a Buc. How do you feel,” Licht said.

“I feel great. I appreciate it,” Trask said.

“I’m going to turn you over to Coach. We’re all excited. You’re in a great place,” Licht said. “Great head coach and coordinators, position coach Tom Moore. All excited to have you here and looking forward to seeing you, bud.”

“Yes sir. H— yeah. Let’s do it,” Trask said.

“Alright, here’s coach,” Licht said.

“Hey Kyle,” Arians said.

“How’s it going,” Trask asked.

“Doing great. Congratulations,” Arians said.

“I appreciate it,” Trask said. “We’re excited about having you. Everybody in the workout loved you, and Byron (Leftwich) and Clyde (Christensen) haven’t stopped talking about you since. So I’m really, really excited to have you join our team and get ready to roll.”

“Alright. Thank you. I appreciate it,” Trask said.

Trask’s Name is Called on Stage

At the end of the call, Trask, his family, and his girlfriend hear the announcement “the Tampa Bay Buccaneers select Kyle Trask” on the NFL Draft broadcast. The family started cheering, and Trask embraced his mother, Melissa Charba. Florida Gators football Tweeted the video of the moment the call ended.

“I’m just super excited for this opportunity. I had some great conversations with a lot of the offensive coaches from the Buccaneers,” Trask told the media. “Towards the end of the round when their picks were coming up, I always figured there was potential there, and luckily they believed in me enough to give me this opportunity. They’re going to get everything I got.”

Trask will join the defending Super Bowl champions after a stellar three-year career with the Gators where he threw for 7,386 yards and 69 touchdowns. The Manvel, Texas, native finished fourth in the Heisman Trophy voting last year and led the Gators to the SEC title game.

Learning From the GOAT

With the Bucs, he will play behind and learn behind arguably the greatest quarterback of all time, Tom Brady, and compete with backup Ryan Griffin on the depth chart. Brady, 43, was early in his NFL career when Trask, 23, was born.

“They definitely have a great system going on down there in Tampa Bay,” Trask told the media on Friday.

Trask said he looks forward to “the opportunity to learn from one of the greats that I watched growing up” and that Brady’s “been one of my favorites.”

Trask said he anticipates meeting Brady for the first time will be surreal.

“So to have that opportunity is truly remarkable but nevertheless I’m going to come in and work my tail off and do whatever I can to help this team,” Trask said.
