The Tampa Bay Buccaneers might make a splashy move at cornerback in the near future — maybe in the 1st round of the 2026 NFL draft.
Until then, it’s hard to argue with their approach so far, which seems to be strength in numbers.
The Buccaneers flexed their muscles in that regard with a pair of free-agent cornerback signings on Thursday, which should add much-needed depth, signing Kemon Hall away from the Tennessee Titans and Chase Lucas away from the San Francisco 49ers.
“Former Titans free-agent CB Kemon Hall is signing a one-year deal with the Buccaneers,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter wrote on his official X account.
“The Buccaneers have agreed to terms with CB Chase Lucas on a one-year deal, per his agent Jamal Tooson,” NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport wrote on his official X account. “Lucas, who appeared in 15 games for the 49ers, became a free agent when he went untendered as a restricted FA. Now heads east to Tampa in Todd Bowles’ defense.”
It’s pretty clear both Hall and Lucas are being brought in to, hopefully, add depth at the cornerback spots and be key players the team can rely on with special teams.
“I don’t think either corner the Bucs signed today would ideally be a third outside corner behind McCollum/Morrison,” Fox Sports NFL reporter Greg Auman wrote on his official X account on Thursday. “That’ll either come from the draft or another veteran signing. Parrish could slide outside as needed as well … Bucs’ secondary as it stands: McCollum/Morrison at corner, WInfield/Tykee at safety, Parrish at nickel. Wide-open depth — likely a draft pick and Killebrew, then 2-3 more on the 53, from J.J. Roberts, Josh Hayes, Banks, Wisdom and new corners Lucas and Hall.”
Wild Football Journey for Cornerback Kemon Hall
Dating back to his senior year at Calhoun City (Mississippi) High School in 2014, Hall will have played for an incredible 10 different teams over the last 12 years.
In college, Hall started at Itawamba Community College for 2 seasons before he transferred to North Texas for his final 2 seasons then went undrafted in 2019.
Hall, 5-foot-11 and 202 pounds, signed as an undrafted free agent with the Los Angeles Chargers in 2019 — the first of 2 stints with the Chargers — and has also spent time with the Minnesota Vikings, Dallas Cowboys (twice), New Orleans Saints, San Francisco 49ers, Titans, and now the Buccaneers.
Chase Lucas Played Career-High 15 Games in 2025
Lucas, 5-foot-11 and 184 pounds, was a high school teammate with fellow future NFL players N’Keal Harry and Bryce Perkins at Chandler (Arizona) High School and led the school to its first state championship since 1949.
He starred at Arizona State, where he was a 2-time All-Pac-12 selection, before he was selected in the 7th round (No. 237 overall) in the 2022 NFL draft by the Detroit Lions in the 2022 NFL draft.
“Slender boundary corner with an enormous amount of football snaps in his background,” NFL draft analyst Lance Zierlein wrote in his pre-draft evaluation. “Lucas plays in off coverages, which is likely for the best considering his lack of strength and long speed. He typically trusts his eyes and has the traits to make plays on the football. … His lack of size will make him a target against both the run and pass at the next level. Lucas projects as a late-round pick or undrafted free agent who could struggle to find NFL work.”
