In an offseason that’s only one week old, the Washington Commanders have been dealing with one bad headline after another.
The latest came when news broke of embattled cornerback Marshon Lattimore being arrested on Wednesday, January 7, in Lakewood, Ohio, on weapons charges.
“He was arrested last night outside of Cleveland on charges of carrying a concealed weapon and improperly handling a firearm in a motor vehicle,” 7 News DC’s Scott Abraham wrote on his official X account along with a picture of Lattimore’s mug shot. ” … According to the Lakewood police department, Marshon was a passenger in a vehicle stopped for expired plates and other traffic violations. During the stop, Marshon did not tell the officer that there was a firearm in the vehicle when asked.”
Lattimore, 29 years old, suffered a season-ending torn ACL in Week 9 against the Seattle Seahawks and is likely to be cut in the offseason — regardless of his arrest — as it would save the Commanders $18.5 million in salary cap space.
Lattimore Arrested on Gun Charges in 2021
It’s not the first time Lattimore has been arrested on gun charges.
In March 2021, Lattimore was arrested in Ohio on felony charges of being in possession of a gun which had been reported stolen.
From ESPN: “New Orleans Saints cornerback Marshon Lattimore was arrested Thursday night in his hometown of Cleveland for possessing a loaded handgun that was believed to be stolen, according to the Cleveland Police. According to court records, Lattimore has been charged with receiving stolen property, which is identified as a fourth-degree felony … According to the Cleveland Police, Lattimore was a passenger in a vehicle that police stopped for multiple traffic violations at about 10:30 p.m. on Thursday. During the course of the stop, Lattimore was found to have a loaded handgun in his possession. He was arrested on charges of carrying a concealed weapon (failure to notify) and for receiving stolen property after the gun was later found to be entered as stolen out of the city of Euclid, Ohio.”
Lattimore eventually pled guilty to a misdemeanor charge of failing to inform police he was in possession of a concealed handgun and fined $1,000 after it was later discovered Lattimore had a concealed weapon permit.
The Commanders issued a statement following Lattimore’s arrest: “We have been made aware of the arrest and are gathering more information. We have informed the NFL League Office and have no further comment at this time.”
One of Worst Trades in Franchise History
The Commanders sent a 2025 third round pick, 2025 fourth round pick and 2026 sixth round pick to the Saints in exchange for Lattimore, a 4-time Pro Bowler, and a 2025 fifth round pick.
ESPN’s Seth Walder singled the deal out as he re-evaluated last year’s big time trades, with the Commanders seeming like winners at the time but one year later clearly having gotten the short end of the stick.
Over 2 seasons, Lattimore has played in just 11 games for the Commanders.
“The Commanders can get out of Marshon Lattimore’s deal without dead money,” 106.7 The Fan’s Grant Paulsen wrote on X. “I’m team ‘innocent until proven guilty,’ but already thought there was no reason to continue on with Lattimore. This won’t help his chances of staying on the team at $18.5 against the cap this season.”
