There is no secret that the Boston Bruins are looking to make some moves ahead of the trade deadline. At the moment, the club is narrowly hanging on to an Eastern Conference playoff spot. GM Don Sweeney previously attempted to improve his squad by targeting Rasmus Andersson. While the deal appeared close, the defenseman ultimately joined the Las Vegas Golden Knights.
Despite missing out on Andersson, the Bruins are fully expected to take another swing at a significant trade. The pursuit of the former Flame clearly shows that Boston wants to grab a right-handed blueliner. The Athletic has also claimed that this is the club’s biggest need in the trade market. On top of strengthening their defense, the Bruins are also eyeing a new forward.
As NBC Sports Boston has pointed out, the team has overachieved offensively throughout the 2025-26 season. In fact, the Bruins even lead the league in goals scored above expected goals on the campaign (18). With a tough schedule looming, Boston is likely looking for forward reinforcements.
One particularly interesting option could be Kiefer Sherwood. The veteran was recently dealt from the Vancouver Canucks to the San Jose Sharks. Nevertheless, The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun believes that Sherwood could still be available. “A league source told me this week that the Sharks are open to the possibility of flipping Sherwood if they can’t get him signed [to an extension],” claimed LeBrun.
Boston Bruins Could Want Extension to Come With Kiefer Sherwood Deal

GettyKiefer Sherwood could soon be on the move once again.
Before his move to California, the Bruins were heavily linked with Sherwood. A source familiar with the situation even informed RG’s James Murphy that Sweeney called Vancouver regarding the forward’s availability in November. Sherwood’s former teammate Conor Garland was apparently discussed at the time as well.
Although the veteran ultimately moved to San Jose, the Bruins could re-enter the race once again. The Sharks gave up two second-round draft picks for Sherwood. Because of this, they would almost certainly want to at least receive a similar package if they opt to flip the forward. They could even want more in return.
Either way, Sherwood should be in demand in the coming days. His current $1.5 million AAV cap hit would work well in Boston. According to PuckPedia.com, the Bruins have just under $3.5 million in current cap space. Despite the seemingly solid match, Sweeney may want Sherwood to agree to a contract extension before striking a deal. The exec previously had the same preference in the Andersson negotiations.
Forward Would Match Well With Boston’s Roster Plans
The Sharks, however, still have a little time to get Sherwood to agree to an extension. As LeBrun points out, San Jose gave up a decent package to acquire the forward and will want to iron out a fresh contract with the player. Nevertheless, the insider believes that Sherwood is likely to be dealt if the two sides cannot agree on new terms.
Boston’s potential interest in Sherwood would align with Sweeney’s long-term roster goal. The exec prefers to target players in the trade market who are similarly aged as current stars David Pastrnak (29), Jeremy Swayman (27), and Charlie McAvoy (28). The current Sharks winger, 30, is only just a bit older than the trio.
