The Boston Bruins made a seemingly minor trade on Friday. The club sent forward Jeffrey Viel to the Anaheim Ducks for a fourth-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft.

Viel is pretty much a depth forward who’s shown a strong work ethic and a willingness to wait for his opportunity. But he hasn’t had much of an opportunity to play this season. In 10 games, he’s failed to register a point.

So, why would the Ducks trade for a 13th or 14th forward by paying a fourth-round pick? The answer lies in an interesting insight offered by Bruins resident guru Fluto Shinzawa. Shinzawa underscored how the Bruins were afraid of losing Viel for nothing by placing him on waivers.

That’s why it was better to get something for him than to see some other club claim him. It’s an interesting take, and one that would explain why the Bruins would be willing to make a deal now.

As for the Ducks’ end of the trade, the Ducks felt that another club might beat them by claiming Viel ahead of them. As such, the mid-round pick was worth the gamble. The Ducks are trending in the wrong direction after a strong start to the season. Perhaps the Ducks are eyeing another deal elsewhere, and Viel could fill a role moving forward.

That’s speculation at this point. But what is palpable is that the Bruins wanted to get something for Viel. The move isn’t necessarily Earth-shattering, but it’s the sort of trade that could turn nothing into something.

Bruins Clear Cap Space and Free Up a Contract

The Bruins’ thought process could revolve around wanting to clear up some cap space and make room for another contract.

Following Friday’s trade, the Bruins have just under $1 million in cap space. That would account for a little over $2 million in deadline cap space. Meanwhile, Boston has 45 of 50 contracts on the books. That means the Bruins could add another five contracts to their active limit.

The situation, as it stands, could be a move to serve as a precursor for a bigger deal. The Bruins remain very much in contention for a playoff spot. That’s why moving Viel could be part of the Bruins deadline strategy. Rumblings suggest something bigger could be in the works.

Boston Stocking Up on Assets Ahead of Deadline

Friday’s trade added another fourth-round pick to the Bruins’ cache. Boston now has two first-rounders and three fourth-rounders. That’s a solid bit of capital which could go a long way in another trade.

In addition to clearing cap space, the Bruins wanted additional draft picks to barter in future trades. That’s why GM Don Sweeney saw losing Viel as a missed opportunity to get more assets in return.

While the Bruins haven’t been part of rumblings involving major names at this point, they could be at some point. As more and more teams begin to punt on the season, the Bruins want to have the assets to go shopping at the trade deadline.

For instance, Boston could be looking at the New York Rangers to find valuable depth pieces. As a result, the Bruins could be one of the most surprising teams come this trade deadline.
