The Boston Bruins had a quiet 2026 NHL trade deadline, which was surprising when noting that they had two big roster needs in a top-six winger and a right-shot defenseman. However, the Bruins elected not to address those major needs.
While this is the case, the Bruins have added to their forward depth by bringing in a former first-round pick. This is because the Bruins have acquired forward Lukas Reichel from the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for a sixth-round pick.
It was no secret that Reichel struggled to find his fit with the Canucks after being acquired from the Chicago Blackhawks earlier this season. Now, he will get the chance of another fresh start with this trade to Boston.
In 19 games this season split between the Blackhawks and Canucks, Reichel has recorded two goals, three assists, five points, and a minus-4 rating. However, he noticeably struggled after being traded to the Canucks, as he had one assist and a minus-5 rating in 14 games with Vancouver. He also spent a good amount of time in the AHL with the Abbotsford Canucks, where he had six goals, seven assists, and 13 points in 23 games.
Overall, it has been a hard year for Reichel, but he will now be looking to turn things around with the Bruins organization from here following this trade.
Bruins Make Low-Risk Trade By Landing Lukas Reichel
While the Bruins landing Reichel is certainly far from a big splash, it is also a move that carries no risk for the Original Six club. All they needed to give up for him was a sixth-round pick, and that is a small price to pay for added forward depth. Furthermore, if he ends up not being a fit for the Bruins, they can simply move on from him this summer, as he is a pending restricted free agent (RFA).
However, with Reichel being a former first-round pick and only 23 years old, it makes sense that a retooling team like the Bruins are taking a chance on him. While he has yet to break out and become a full-time player, he is still young enough that he could hit a new level. He has also shown promise at the NHL level in the past, as he had seven goals, eight assists, and 15 points in 23 games for the Blackhawks during the 2022-23 season. Perhaps getting a fresh start with the Bruins could help him regain that form.
Yet, even if Reichel ends up simply being a depth forward for the Bruins, there is no real harm in them bringing him in.
Reichel & The Canucks Both Needed to Move On
When looking at how this season went for Reichel after he was traded, it was clear that both he and Vancouver needed to move on from each other. The fit was just not there, so it makes sense that the Canucks decided to trade him.
With this move, Reichel will now get a fresh start with the Bruins, while the Canucks have landed a late draft pick for him. Overall, both sides should benefit from this trade, and it will be interesting to see how Reichel performs with the Bruins from here.
