The Detroit Red Wings will soon be returning to game action. This is because the Original Six club is set to face off against the Ottawa Senators on Feb. 26 in what will be their first game following the Olympics.
With the Olympics nearing their completion, the NHL roster freeze will soon be lifted. With this, clubs around the league will be able to start making trades again shortly, and the Red Wings will undoubtedly be a team to watch.
The Red Wings currently sport the third-place spot in the Atlantic Division standings, so they should be among the top buyers in the NHL. This is especially so true given that they have a ton of cap space and are trying to break their nine-year playoff drought.
One of the Red Wings’ most important trade needs leading up to the 2026 NHL trade deadline is to improve the right side of their blueline. When looking at trade candidates around the NHL that could be potential fits for the Red Wings, Boston Bruins blueliner Andrew Peeke stands out as an interesting option.
Due to this, we here at Heavy Sports have a trade pitch that would have the Bruins trade Peeke to the Red Wings.
Red Wings Get:
- Andrew Peeke
Bruins Get:
- 2026 Second-Round Pick
Bruins’ Andrew Peeke Is A Trade Candidate to Keep an Eye On
The Bruins may have the second wild card spot in the Eastern Conference, but that has not stopped trade speculation surrounding Peeke. The right-shot defenseman was recently given the No. 24 spot on Chris Johnston’s latest trade board for The Athletic.
“The Bruins took a serious run at landing Rasmus Andersson, which almost certainly would have forced Peeke out of town as a pending unrestricted free agent. He remains a trade chip for an organization retooling on the fly,” Johnston wrote.
This is not the only recent report that has discussed Peeke as a potential trade candidate. The Athletic’s Fluto Shinzawa also reported that the Bruins would be open to moving Peeke if it helps them land an asset that would help their future.
“At the same time, Andrew Peeke and Viktor Arvidsson are on expiring contracts. Peeke, as a 27-year-old right-shot defenseman, has higher trade value than the 32-year-old Arvidsson. If a contender is eager to add right-side depth, the Bruins would be interested in adding to their pipeline,” Shinzawa wrote.
With the Bruins open to moving Peeke, the Red Wings would be wise to consider pursuing him. He would help improve their depth on the right side and give them another defenseman with size to work with.
Peeke Would Give Red Wings Needed Upgrade
When looking at the Red Wings’ current defensive group, they could use a defenseman like Peeke. He would provide them with a clear upgrade over defensemen like Travis Hamonic and Jacob Bernard-Docker on their bottom pairing. In addition, he would give Detroit another option to consider for their penalty kill due to his solid defensive play.
Yet, with the Bruins still being in the playoff race and the market for right-shot defensemen not being the strongest, their starting point in a potential Peeke trade would likely be a second-round pick. With the Red Wings having a strong prospect pool, that could be a price that they are willing to pay if it helps them solidify their defense.
