The Detroit Red Wings are having a strong 2025-26 season. At the time of this writing, they have a 24-15-4 record and are in third place in the Atlantic Division standings. They are also only one point behind the first-place Tampa Bay Lightning in the Atlantic.
With how well the Red Wings have been playing this season, they are certainly improving their odds of snapping their nine-year playoff drought this year. They have also won six out of their last 10 games, so they are not slowing down.
Due to this, it would not be surprising in the slightest if the Red Wings look to strengthen their roster at the 2026 NHL trade deadline. There is no question that they could use another impactful forward ahead of the playoffs, and they are in a position to make some additions. This is because they not only have good trading assets but also plenty of cap space. According to PuckPedia, the Red Wings have over $13 million of cap space.
When looking at trade candidates around the NHL, one player who stands out in a big way as a potential fit for the Red Wings is Vancouver Canucks forward Kiefer Sherwood.
Because of this, we here at Heavy Sports have a trade pitch that would have the Red Wings land Sherwood from the Canucks in a big move.
Red Wings Get:
- Kiefer Sherwood
Canucks Get:
- 2026 First-Round Pick (top 10 protected)
- 2027 Fourth-Round Pick
Red Wings Are Linked to Canucks’ Kiefer Sherwood
According to The Fourth Period, the Red Wings are among the teams that are interested in acquiring Sherwood from the Canucks.
“Several teams remain interested in Sherwood, including the Montreal Canadiens, Dallas Stars, Minnesota Wild, Boston Bruins and Detroit Red Wings. The Tampa Bay Lightning were considered a team with interest, but Pagnotta reported they are not currently in the mix,” The Fourth Period reported.
Hearing that the Red Wings are interested in Sherwood is not surprising in the slightest. When examining their current lineup, there is no doubt that Sherwood would be a good addition to it. He would slot very nicely in their middle six and would also work on Detroit’s power play and penalty kill if acquired.
Sherwood would also give the Red Wings a player who is built for playoff hockey, as he plays a very gritty game. This is made apparent by his 198 hits in 41 games this season and his NHL-record 462 hits from last season.
Sherwood would also give the Red Wings more secondary scoring, as he has 17 goals and 21 points so far this season with Vancouver.
Sherwood’s Trade Market Should Only Heat Up
With Sherwood being a tough forward who scores, there is no question that his trade market should only continue to heat up as we inch closer to the trade deadline. He also has an easily affordable $1.5 million cap hit, which only increases his appeal.
As a result of this, there is no question that the Red Wings are going to have a lot of competition in the Sherwood sweepstakes. However, with the Red Wings looking to snap their playoff drought, they should go all-in for the 30-year-old winger.
