It’s no secret that the Detroit Red Wings are looking for help on the backend. With Simon Edvinsson out through the Olympic break, Detroit needs all the help it can get to contend in the highly-competitive Atlantic division. Darren Dreger of TSN confirmed the Red Wings’ interest in a top-four defenseman on last week’s episode of “Insider Trading“.
“They are looking for a number two centre, a player with term, and preferably a right-shot defenceman, again, with term. When you look at what Detroit might be willing to part with, you have a look at their draft list. They’ve got a number of juicy picks that could be in play.”
If the Red Wings hope to maintain their status at second place in the Atlantic, they’ll need to bolster their blue line. Heavy Sports has a trade pitch that sees the Red Wings acquire Winnipeg Jets defenseman Logan Stanley in exchange for a draft pick and defenseman Jacob Bernard-Docker.
Red Wings receive:
- Logan Stanley
Jets receive:
- Jacob Bernard-Docker
- 2026 3rd round pick
Stanley Brings Presence, Physicality to Red Wings
Standing at 6’7″ and weighing in at 231 lbs, Logan Stanley is a presence on the ice. Between high-energy hits and downright physical dominance, grit is the name of Stanley’s game. His willingness to drop the gloves and stand up for his teammates brings a tough-as-nails aggression the Red Wings have sought out for years. This season, Stanley hit career highs in goals and points with eight goals and 17 points in 53 games.
With Stanley on the roster, the Red Wings acquire the perfect weapon for a playoff push. Hard-hitting, high-energy players are a premium. Stanley is 27 years old and approaching his prime. He’s just the kind of player the Red Wings hope to acquire before the trade deadline.
Jets Acquire Young Defenseman, Draft Capital
The Jets, on the other hand, are in an odd position. They’re too talented to bottom out, but sit near the bottom of the Central division this season. Stanley makes $1.25M this season and is due for an extension after the 2025-26 campaign comes to an end. To top it all off, Stanley and the Jets have not discussed a contract extension.
When asked about his future, Stanley said he prefers to focus on the task at hand.
“I think everybody would be lying if they said they didn’t think about that. There’s a lot of aspects you’re thinking about. Family, kids, everything like that. But you try to block it out, come every day and try to work your hardest. Whatever happens, happens. Trying to help this team push to get into that race to make the playoffs and that’s what I’m most focused on. The rest will take care of itself.”
In exchange for trading Stanley, the Jets receive a mid-round draft pick and Jacob Bernard-Docker, a depth defenseman with Detroit. Bernard-Docker is a 25-year-old defenseman on an affordable deal. While he’s shown flashes of potential, he hasn’t had a consistent role with the Red Wings, often swapped in and out of the lineup. With the Jets, he’ll receive more ice time and a chance to carve out a long-term role for himself.
This potential trade is a win-win for both sides. The Jets shed salary and acquire draft capital, while the Red Wings earn a key piece for their playoff push.
