One of the most interesting storylines for the Montreal Canadiens this season has been that of Michael Hage.
When the Habs drafted him in the first round of the 2024 NHL Draft, it was clear the team saw plenty of potential in him. But no one really envisioned just how much attention Hage would draw, especially at this point in the season.
There was plenty of speculation about the 19-year-old turning pro after a strong season with the Michigan Wolverines in the NCAA. Despite the Canadiens’ overtures to sign him to an entry-level deal, Hage decided to return to college.
And that was the right move.
As Marco D’Amico noted in a piece in RG Media, a source close to the situation described how Hage didn’t feel he could help the team in the way the Canadiens would like. The help the Canadiens seek is seeing Hage as a 2C.
“He wants to be ready for Montreal and he didn’t feel he could do that as a centre right now,” said a source close to the situation. “Being that all-around centre that can take on offensive and defensive matchups in the NHL was a priority.”
Had Hage joined the Canadiens at this point in the season, he would have likely lined up on the wing. It’s not unusual for young centers to line up on the wing as they eventually transition to center.
However, Hage didn’t feel he could be the type of player for the Habs now. That’s why heading back to the NCAA for another season was the right choice.
Canadiens Supportive of Hage’s Decision
As for the Canadiens, they were far from upset about the move. As Hage’s agent Matt Williams noted, the Habs were fine with whatever path their first-round selection opted for.
“Michael was given every option by Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton. NHL, AHL, or a return to the NCAA and he ultimately made the decision to go back to Michigan. The Canadiens said they supported whatever decision he was willing to take. Kent has been great and was very understanding.”
The point in having Hage now wasn’t so much about playing, but just soaking up the experience.
“They just wanted him around the team, they value him quite highly and rightfully so,” added a source close to the Canadiens.
Perhaps there might still be a way for Hage to hang around the team without actually playing. For now, seeing Hage in a Habs uniform will have to wait at least one more season.

The Focus Is on Hage’s Development
The entire focus of the situation is on Hage’s development. As the anonymous source noted, the NCAA provides Hage a chance to get into the sort of shape the Canadiens need him to be in.
“The NCAA, especially of late, offers Michael the chance to bulk up, grow his two-way game, be the guy in Michigan, and lead them to a natty.”
Oh yes, there’s also the issue of the NCAA National Championship. The Wolverines lost in this year’s Frozen Four. That’s why Hage would like to come back next year and be “the guy” during Michigan’s next title run.
Hage wasn’t the go-to figure this season. One more season, however, could change that. Another solid year and a National Championship may lead Hage to the Canadiens.
