The Montreal Canadiens might need to make a move.
And a fresh trade possibility surfaced that could give general manager Kent Hughes a way to strengthen the middle of his lineup without chasing a huge name on the market.
Ken MacMillan of The Hockey Writers named the Calgary Flames as one of three teams Montreal could trade with during the preseason on Aug. 22, singling out Morgan Frost as an ideal fit for the Canadiens.
Frost is coming off a career year in Calgary.
The 27-year-old center recorded 22 goals and 43 points in 82 games while winning nearly 57% of his faceoffs. He’s also entering the final season of a contract carrying a $4.375 million cap hit before he can become an unrestricted free agent.

Montreal’s search for help down the middle has lingered through the offseason.
The club has an established No. 1 center, but a secondary proven option would give the Canadiens more flexibility behind him.
Frost fits that lane.
The Hockey News examined the possibility of a deal between Montreal and Calgary in July, pointing to the Canadiens’ need at center and the Flames’ willingness to move players during their rebuild.
The outlet returned to Frost on Aug. 12, calling him an “intriguing” target for Montreal and a potential middle-six addition.
Frost would arrive without the same acquisition cost likely attached to some of the higher-end centers floated around Montreal this summer.
The former first-round pick has also shown he can provide secondary scoring. His 22 goals last season set a career high, while his 43 points marked another productive campaign for a player who has settled into a regular NHL role.
His contract is in a good spot right now as well.
The Flames signed Frost to a two-year, $8.75 million contract in July 2025, carrying an average annual value of $4.375 million.
An acquiring team would take on only one guaranteed season before deciding whether a longer commitment makes sense.
Flames Have Reason to Keep Trade Door Open
There’s more behind the Frost discussion than a theoretical roster fit.
The Hockey News reported on July 18 that NHL insider David Pagnotta said rival teams were continuing to check in with Calgary and that Frost remained among the names generating interest.
“Morgan Frost’s name still out there,” Pagnotta said.
Daily Faceoff’s Anthony Di Marco also reported earlier in the offseason that Calgary was willing to listen on most of its roster as the organization aimed toward a rebuild.
Di Marco identified Frost as a valuable trade chip because centers are in demand across the league.
That environment could work in Montreal’s favor if the Canadiens decide a forward is needed before opening night.
Calgary acquired Morgan Frost from the Philadelphia Flyers in January 2025 as part of a four-player trade.
Frost has since produced the best goal-scoring season of his career, strengthening the Flames’ ability to seek a meaningful return rather than move him simply to clear salary.
Montreal has the prospect pool and draft capital to enter those discussions without dismantling the young core that drove last season’s playoff run.
The question would be how highly Hughes values Frost as a potential middle-six answer and whether Calgary’s asking price reflects a player entering the final year of his deal.
