It was another game, and another shutout loss for the floundering New York Rangers. Their 2-0 shutout setback on Thursday evening against the Carolina Hurricanes represented the seventh time this season that they’ve failed to find the back of the net on home ice, which is nothing short of astounding.
Not only was it the seventh time on home ice they’ve failed to score a goal, it was also the ninth time this season as a whole.
For the Rangers, it was their last game before the schedule pauses for three weeks to accommodate the upcoming 2026 Winter Olympics, marking the first time in 10 years that NHL players will participate.
One player on the Rangers who will be traveling to Milan to represent the United States is team captain J.T. Miller, who is facing another round of heavy criticism for what he had to say following the lackluster loss.
“I don’t know,” Miller said. “It hasn’t been good enough the last little while. Try to regroup, freshen up. … We just need to enjoy or take time – I literally don’t know. Come back with a better mindset, I guess.”
With the loss, the Rangers fell to 22-29-6, and they remain entrenched in last place in the Metropolitan Division standings.
New York Rangers Team Captain J.T. Miller’s Words Have Drawn Heavy Criticism
Miller’s lackluster message drew immediate criticism from Rangers fans, who are already beyond the point of frustration with how the season has gone for their club.
“Messier would never have said this in an interview,” one frustrated fan pointed out.
Invoking Mark Messier again, another fan said, “He has no drive, no leadership skills, and he’s the captain. Bring back Mess to give him a masterclass on leadership!!”
This fan said, “This will be a historically rough choice for captain lol”
“JT Miller is the one guy in the league that I’d never want on my team under any circumstances,” another fan exclaimed.
Head Coach Mike Sullivan Blasted The Effort Of the Club
After the loss, Rangers head coach Mike Sullivan, who is coaching in his first season behind the Rangers bench after being hired during the offseason, said that his club lacked a competitive spirit as a whole.
“My message to the group tonight was I will acknowledge that we’re in a little bit of a difficult circumstance and none of us really want to be in this position or have any sort of enjoyment or fulfillment in this position that we are, but the reality is we are where we are,” Sullivan said.
“I’m trying to be understanding of that as their coach and do our best as a coaching staff to support these guys and push them through the process. I thought tonight we lacked a certain competitive spirit that just is simply unacceptable on our part, and that was my discussion with them.”
The Rangers missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs last season, and it resulted in the firing of head coach Peter Laviolette. Now, baring a miracle of historic proportions, the Rangers will once again be on the outside looking in at the postseason this spring.
