It has been a bit of a strange season for the New York Rangers so far. They currently have a 16-13-4 record, which is solid, but they are also seventh in the very competitive Metropolitan Division.
While the Rangers sit in seventh place in the Metropolitan Division standings, they are certainly in a position to move up the standings. Right now, the Rangers are only one point behind the fifth-place Pittsburgh Penguins and the sixth-place New Jersey Devils. They are also just two points behind the fourth-place Philadelphia Flyers, so there is reason to be optimistic about the Rangers’ chances of climbing up the standings.
Yet, with things being so tight in the Eastern Conference in general, the Rangers would be wise to explore the trade market. When looking at their current roster, it is certainly fair to argue that they could use another impactful winger in their top nine.
Now that we are approaching the holiday break, trade rumors are starting to pick up. One NHL trade candidate who would make a ton of sense for the Rangers to pursue is Vancouver Canucks forward Kiefer Sherwood.
Because of this, we here at Heavy Sports have a trade proposal that would have the Canucks send Sherwood to the Rangers in a big move.
Rangers Get:
- Kiefer Sherwood
Canucks Get:
- 2026 Second-Round Pick
- 2028 Fourth-Round Pick
- Brennan Othmann
Sherwood Is Canucks’ Top Trade Candidate With Quinn Hughes Now Gone
Now that the Canucks have officially gotten their fire sale started by trading superstar defenseman Quinn Hughes, Sherwood has become Vancouver’s top trade candidate. The gritty winger is a pending unrestricted free agent (UFA) having a good year and has a bargain $1.5 million cap hit, so the Canucks are expected to take advantage of that.
Due to the questions surrounding Sherwood’s future in Vancouver, he was recently included on NHL insider Chris Johnston’s latest trade board for The Athletic.
“The Canucks haven’t shown any inclination to sign the pending unrestricted free agent to an extension, but signing him with a new contract in place would maximize his trade value,” Johnston wrote.
With the Rangers’ forward group needing a boost, bringing in a winger who chips in offensively and plays a heavy game like Sherwood could be excellent for them. Thus, they should strongly consider making a push for Sherwood.
Sherwood Would Give Rangers’ Top Nine a Big Boost
When looking at the Rangers’ current lineup, it is clear that they could use a player like Sherwood. Due to his ability to play both wings, he could be a nice upgrade over Conor Sheary on the Rangers’ second line with Vincent Trocheck and J.T. Miller. However, he could also work on the Rangers’ third line with Will Cuylle and Noah Laba.
Due to his solid two-way play, Sherwood would also provide the Rangers with another clear option to work with on their penalty kill and power play if acquired.
In 32 games so far this season with the Canucks, Sherwood has posted 13 goals, 17 points, and 140 hits. With numbers like these, he would have the potential to give the Rangers’ roster a nice boost.
