New York Rangers Rumors leading up to the 2026 trade deadline signaled a major trade was on the horizon. But no such blockbuster ever came to fruition.

One of the trades that never materialized, despite all the talk, was Vincent Trocheck leaving Broadway. All the rumors and all the talk never amounted to anything once March 6 rolled around.

Numerous teams were part of the chatter involving Trocheck, most notably the Minnesota Wild. But not even the Wild and trigger-happy GM Bill Guerin pulled anything off.

The belief was that the asking price on Trocheck was so high that it scared the bejeezus out of several teams.

Now, insider Frank Seravalli has confirmed these Rangers rumors. In a recent appearance on Flames Talk, he described how the exorbitant price tag led to numerous teams passing on the 32-year-old center.

“The price was so prohibitive, that was the common refrain from Minnesota and Carolina and Boston and Detroit and all these teams that were in on Trocheck, they just felt like it was too much.”

As for what precisely that prohibitive price was, there’s speculation about it. The prevailing wisdom is that it entailed a first-round pick, a high-end prospect, and another roster piece. In particular, Rangers GM Chris Drury eyed other teams’ top prospects.

In the Wild’s case, Rangers rumors posited that the Rangers wanted top forward prospect, Charlie Stramel.

Ultimately, Drury overplayed his hand. He wanted to make a stand after seeming overly debilitated in the Artemi Panarin negotiations. The stand, unfortunately, came a little too late.

Rangers Rumors Involving Trocheck Will Not Go Away

Rangers rumors involving Trocheck will not go away. It’s not like the club can just turn the page and expect everyone to forget what happened at this year’s trade deadline.

While the chatter may not necessarily leap to the forefront of everyone’s minds, the fact is that the talk should pick up once the season is over.

In that regard, it’s likely that Rangers rumors will almost certainly go into overdrive leading up to the 2026 NHL Draft. Perhaps a draft-day trade could be in the cards. That’s certainly a possibility, especially if one of the teams involved, such as the Wild, falls short in the playoffs.

The asking price may change by then. Teams’ willingness to pay up may also change by then as well.

There Is No Need to Trade Trocheck for Now

At this point, there is no need to trade Trocheck. He’s under contract for a couple of more seasons.

But that’s not the reason why Rangers rumors surrounding Trocheck predicted a trade. The main reason is the club’s rebuild. And that’s the biggest sticking point. The team is looking to get younger.

But there’s no way that can happen without transforming veterans into draft picks and/or prospects. That means the Rangers will need to figure out what to do about Trocheck heading into the offseason.

The reality is that Rangers rumors will not fade until a rebuild is fully underway. That will mean moving just about every remaining big contract in New York.  As such, this upcoming offseason will be one of the most interesting ones in a long time.
