Like the song says, if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere. And rumor has it that NHL superstar Kirill Kaprizov may just be looking to melt away these little town blues and make a brand-new start of it.
Right there in old New York.
In a recent live Q&A with readers for The Athletic, New York Rangers beat writer Vincent Mercogliano was asked his thoughts on the kind of “realistic trade package” it would take for the Rangers to acquire Kaprizov. But Mercogliano did more than just suggest the potential pieces of a hypothetical deal.
He gave Rangers fans a reason to dream:
“This is a situation I’m keeping a close eye on. There are a lot of connections to make here. Kaprizov and [Artemi] Panarin share the same agent, and I’ve also heard he’s close with fellow Russians (and Rangers) Igor Shesterkin and Vladislav Gavrikov. I think there are a lot of selling points that would appeal to Kaprizov if he decides not to re-up with Minnesota. Of course, there’s a long way to go and there’s clearly some posturing going on here. But I’ve heard the Rangers would be on his short list, and we know Drury has growing cap space and a desire to reshape the core. I expect them to be aggressive if he ever becomes available.”
That’s a good amount of pros and really nothing in the way of cons lending weight to the concept of Kaprizov donning a Rangers sweater in the near future.
Insider Says Kirill Kaprizov Has New York Rangers ‘On His Short List’
Rumors around Kaprizov’s future have been swirling ever since reports surfaced of Minnesota dangling a massive $128 million extension to try and keep their franchise winger. Wild GM Bill Guerin has played his cards close, publicly insisting that they’ll “do everything possible” to keep Kaprizov. But the uncertainty lingers, and multiple outlets — including Bleacher Report and Blade of Steel — have suggested New York is already on his radar should he decide to force a move.
This is where timing matters. The Rangers are fresh off a disappointing playoff run and appear primed for reshaping. Chris Drury has maneuvered the cap to create flexibility in the near future. Add in the possibility of Panarin being open to a pay cut to extend his stay on Broadway, and the stage is set for something seismic.
And as Mercogliano hinted, the personal ties Kaprizov already has to the Rangers’ Russian core might be just as important as the financials. For a player with options, comfort matters — and New York checks those boxes.
If you strip away the noise and look strictly at the on-ice impact, it’s hard to overstate what Kaprizov would mean to the Rangers. Since breaking into the league in 2020-21, the 28-year-old has been nothing short of electric. He’s already a Calder Trophy winner, a three-time 40-goal scorer, and the engine of Minnesota’s offense.
Kaprizov combines elite edgework with deceptive shooting ability, often needing just a sliver of space to turn a possession into a scoring chance. He’s also underrated as a playmaker, routinely finishing near the top of the Wild’s assist totals. For a Rangers team that often relied on Shesterkin to keep games close and Panarin to drive all of the offense, Kaprizov would be a transformational addition.
Imagine him on the same sheet as Mika Zibanejad and Panarin. Imagine him as the heir apparent to carry the scoring mantle for years as Panarin eventually transitions into a veteran supporting role. That’s the kind of move that doesn’t just improve your top six — it resets your franchise’s competitive window.
Package of Alexis Lafrenière, 1st-Round Picks Could Send Kirill Kaprizov to New York
Of course, dreams come at a cost. And Mercogliano spelled out exactly what that price might be.
“What would it take to pull off a trade?” he wrote. “I’d imagine a couple first-round picks (they conveniently have two next year) and a player like Alexis Lafrenière. Clearing Laf’s salary might give them the ability to sign Kaprizov and keep Panarin, assuming the latter is willing to take a bit of a pay cut to stay.”
That’s the framework: Lafrenière as the centerpiece, paired with two first-rounders, with the cap gymnastics being part of the selling point. For Minnesota, Lafrenière offers a former No. 1 overall pick with untapped upside — a player who might flourish with a bigger role and less pressure than he’s faced in New York. Add in premium draft capital, and the Wild could frame the deal as both a win-now and a long-term play.
Would that sting for the Rangers? Absolutely. Lafrenière finally showed flashes of consistency last season, and first-round picks are the currency of NHL longevity. But this is Kirill Kaprizov we’re talking about — a player who instantly changes the ceiling of a contender.
Trades of this magnitude don’t happen often, and they certainly don’t come without risk. But the Rangers find themselves in a rare position: a mix of financial flexibility, asset depth, and personal connections to the player in question.
That doesn’t guarantee anything — Guerin will fight to the last to keep his superstar — but it does mean the idea of Kaprizov skating onto the Madison Square Garden ice in a blue sweater is more than just a pipe dream.
