The Toronto Maple Leafs made their first big splash of trade deadline week when they traded forward Nicolas Roy to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for a conditional 2027 first-round pick and a conditional 2026 fifth-round pick. This was after Roy was the subject of trade rumors for multiple weeks.
While the Maple Leafs made a notable move dealing Roy, they should not be done. The Maple Leafs have an array of trade candidates to watch due to how disappointing their 2025-26 season has been. Among them are Brandon Carlo, Scott Laughton, Simon Benoit, and Oliver Ekman-Larsson.
Yet, the Maple Leafs’ biggest remaining trade chip is forward Bobby McMann. The 29-year-old forward is a pending unrestricted free agent (UFA) who is having himself a strong 2025-26 season. Due to this, if the Maple Leafs are unable to extend him, they will have no choice but to take advantage of his trade value and move him.
Now, an update on the Maple Leafs’ asking price has been revealed, and it is clear that the Original Six club is hoping to land a nice return for him if they move him.
Maple Leafs Want First-Round Pick for McMann But Are Open to Two Second-Rounders
In a recent article for Sportsnet, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman shared that the Maple Leafs’ hope is to land a first-round pick for McMann. However, Friedman also noted that the Maple Leafs could be open to dealing McMann for two second-round picks if no clubs offer them a first-rounder for the gritty forward.
“If not a first for Bobby McMann (and contenders are running out of them to trade), then Toronto would consider two seconds, which is what Vancouver got for Kiefer Sherwood,” Friedman said.
It is completely understandable that the Maple Leafs want at least two second-round picks for McMann in a trade. As Friedman noted, the Vancouver Canucks landed two second-round picks from the San Jose Sharks for forward Kiefer Sherwood earlier this season. With McMann and Sherwood being comparable players, it makes sense that the Maple Leafs want to get two second-round picks for McMann at least.
Whether the Maple Leafs get a first-round pick or two second-round picks for McMann, it would benefit them. There is no question that the Maple Leafs should be aiming to improve their prospect pool after how this season has gone for them.
Maple Leafs Should Get Plenty of Interest in McMann
With McMann being a hard-nosed top-nine forward who provides secondary scoring and plays both wings, there is no question that the Maple Leafs should continue to get plenty of interest in him with the deadline approaching. A few teams that could make a lot of sense as landing spots for him include the Detroit Red Wings, Buffalo Sabres, Tampa Bay Lightning, Vegas Golden Knights, and Edmonton Oilers.
As a result of this, the possibility of Toronto getting a first-round pick or two second-round picks for McMann absolutely cannot be ruled out. It will be fascinating to see if they move him from here.
