Toronto Maple Leafs star Auston Matthews was very pleased with his rookie teammate in his NHL debut.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are coming off back-to-back tough losses to the Detroit Red Wings. The first game saw them blow a 2-0 lead and eventually lose 6-3. In the second game, they made some lineup changes, which saw top prospect Easton Cowan make his NHL debut.

Cowan played a little over 14 minutes for the Maple Leafs on Monday afternoon. He took one shot and did not record a point. Moreover, Toronto ended up losing the game thanks to a Mason Appleton goal with less than a minute remaining. However, Cowan still turned in a quality performance all told.

Most of the young forward’s impact came in the little details. He flashed his skill, disrupted passing and shooting lanes, and brought a needed jolt of energy at the top of the lineup. Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews certainly liked what he saw from Cowan’s debut.

“He made plays — made smart plays with the puck,” Matthews said, via The Athletic’s Jonas Siegel. “And when plays were (there) to be made, he made them. And when the simple play was there, to just get the puck deep or whatnot, I thought he made it.”

“I think he just carries himself with such a good confidence in himself and the way that he can play and compete.”

Easton Cowan Made Impact All Over The Ice

The Maple Leafs brought Cowan in to give them a different look. They wanted to see what the rookie forward could bring to their lineup. And they needed to figure out whether the 20-year-old belonged with the NHL team.

In his first test, he passed with flying colors. Cowan was a factor in many plays for the Maple Leafs. He was a fantastic outlet for Matthews. He even led Toronto’s elite goal scorer in on a breakaway with one of his passes.

However, his impact went beyond passing and creativity. He stayed in Detroit’s face all game long. His forcechking and backchecking were standout qualities that his team can appreciate. Teammate Matthew Knies summed up his impact quite well.

“He did a tremendous job in every zone,” Knies said, via Siegel. “I think he played simple and then made some great plays.”

Cowan Making Case To Remain With Maple Leafs

Of course, this is only one game. And it’s important to remember that. Any player can pop off in their debut before falling by the wayside. Cowan needs to build off this performance if he wants to stick around.

Toronto is dealing with some injuries early on. Scott Laughton and Steven Lorentz are working their way back to full health. Once they are ready, the Maple Leafs will need to make some decisions. And these decisions could be made tough if Cowan continues to perform.

The Maple Leafs are trying to win a Stanley Cup. If they are going to carry a young player, he has to be able to contribute right now. It will certainly be interesting to see if Cowan can convince the Leafs he has something to offer in 2025-26 that they simply cannot ignore.
