The Maple Leafs didn't like their effort in their blowout loss to the Mammoth.

The Toronto Maple Leafs may have picked up an impressive victory over the NHL-leading Colorado Avalanche on Monday evening in Denver, but their fortunes were reversed the following night at Delta Center against the Utah Mammoth, who put a hurting on them to the tune of a 6-1 defeat.

The Mammoth were superior to the Maple Leafs in nearly every facet of the game, and it showed.

Afterward, head coach Craig Berube didn’t mince words with how he felt about his club’s performance, noting the major disparity in the energy levels between both clubs.

“Well, there is no excuse,” Berube told reporters following the frustrating loss in Salt Lake City. “They had a lot of energy and jump out there. They were quicker than us tonight, and it showed.”

“They pounced early, I thought we got out of the first down 1-0 and in good shape,” he continued. “We came out in the second, and J.T. (John Tavares) had a breakaway right away. He didn’t put it in. We had some opportunities early on. We got our legs under us. The second goal went in, and the third one really dug us into a hole.”

As it currently stands, the Maple Leafs are in fifth place in the Atlantic Division standings, and are in the second Wild Card playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Behind them by only a single point are the Buffalo Sabres, who raised eyebrows across the NHL by rattling off a 10-game win streak after the termination of maligned GM Kevyn Adams in December; they’re 8-2 in their last 10 games overall.

Additionally, both the Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins are only a point behind Toronto in the standings with 52 points apiece of their own.

The Toronto Maple Leafs Want To Forget Their Effort Against the Mammoth On Tuesday

While the Maple Leafs know that winning every game isn’t a realistic expectation, they know that they must display a hungrier effort moving forward if they are to move up in the tightly-packed standings.

Veteran defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson, who is playing in his second season with the Maple Leafs after having joined from the Stanley Cup-winning Florida Panthers in 2024, said that their effort was sloppy right from the get-go.

“I didn’t really like our game from the start,” Ekman-Larsson said. “They came out and had the puck a little bit more, and it was hard to defend them. So, we’ve got to be better.”

The Maple Leafs Will Face Mitch Marner For The First Time On Thursday

Thursday evening will mark the very first time that the Maple Leafs will play against former forward Mitch Marner, who is now a member of the Vegas Golden Knights following a blockbuster sign-and-trade deal during the offseason.

Marner’s departure from Toronto brought an official end to the “Core Four” era of Auston Matthews, William Nylander, John Tavares, and himself.

He and the rest of the Golden Knights are in a good position right now, currently leading the way in the the Pacific Division with 54 points. Marner himself has tallied 10 goals with 36 assists, producing at a little over a point-per-game pace.
