News of Auston Matthews injury has led to abundant speculation about what’s in store for the remainder of the Toronto Maple Leafs’ season.

The Leafs’ season was already going down the drain. But now, without Matthews for the next 20 games or so, the draining will be even faster. There is nothing to prevent the Leafs now from sinking all the way to the bottom of the standings.

It’s not that Matthews was scoring a ton and carrying the Leafs single-handedly. It’s that the psychological impact of the Matthews injury is like a student official getting news that they won’t pass a class right in the middle of the semester.

It will be surprising if the Leafs manage to win any games from now until the end of the season. And it’s that situation that now leaves the Maple Leafs with a clear path to Gavin McKenna.

How so?

As the Maple Leafs plummet to the bottom of the NHL standings, the possibility of landing the first-overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft and a chance to take Gavin McKenna becomes increasingly possible. It’s like a homeowner getting their fire insurance check. Sure, they’ve lost everything they’ve worked hard to build over the years. But at least the insurance payout offers an opportunity to rebuild.

That’s what a clear path to McKenna provides. The idea of landing a potentially generational talent could be akin to what it felt like when the Maple Leafs landed Matthews back in 2016.

This Matthews injury could be what allows the Maple Leafs to rebuild out of the ashes of a failed era.

Matthews Injury Far More Concerning that Expected

Initial assessments of the Matthews injury were somewhat hopeful that major damage could have been avoided. But now, the prognosis is an MCL tear. While it doesn’t seem like it will require surgery, at least for now, the situation is no less concerning.

Sometimes, players attempt to rest and rehab injuries such as these in order to avoid surgery. But after a few weeks of rehab, surgery emerges as the only option to fully repair the damage. That may be the worst part of this situation with Matthews. The situation may ultimately lead to the Maple Leafs captain needing surgery to repair the tear.

If that’s the case, this Matthews injury may require more time to heal. While the expectation is that the 28-year-old would be back in training camp in the fall, there is no telling just how long it might actually take.

Still, the Maple Leafs have reason to be optimistic. Losing Matthews now, during this sour campaign, isn’t nearly as bad as losing him in the middle of a heated playoff race.

Leafs Have Chance to Audition Prospects

If there’s any silver lining to the Matthews injury, it’s the fact that the Maple Leafs have an opportunity to audition prospects. Fans have seen a couple of forward prospects get a look. Jacob Quillan and Bo Groulx have gotten call-ups, impressing in the early showings.

That said, the Maple Leafs would do well to give other prospects a longer look. If that entails shutting down other veterans for the remainder of the season, so be it. The Matthews injury affords a chance to give up-and-coming players real-world experience. The Leafs will need to know what they have, considering the team is hurtling towards a rebuild.
