The Toronto Maple Leafs have placed three players on waivers as roster cuts continue ahead of the start of the season.
Toronto is slowly cutting down its roster, and on Sept. 27, the Maple Leafs waived three forwards, according to PuckPedia.
Toronto placed Travis Boyd, Bo Groulx, and Vinni Lettieri on waivers in hopes of sending them down to the AHL. It seems unlikely any of the three will be claimed as the veterans should all be impactful players for the Toronto Marlies and will serve as forward depth for the Maple Leafs.
Boyd signed a one-year, $775,000 deal with the Maple Leafs this offseason. The 32-year-old has skated in 299 career NHL games, recording 47 goals and 71 assists for 118 points. He appeared in 3 games in the NHL for the Minnesota Wild last season.
Groulx, meanwhile, signed a two-year, $1.625 million deal with the Maple Leafs. The 25-year-old adds some forward depth to the system and could play NHL games for Toronto this season. He’s skated in 65 career games, recording 1 goal and 4 assists for 5 points in his NHL career.
The final player that Toronto waived is Lettieri, who the Maple Leafs signed to a one-year, $775,000 deal with Toronto this offseason. The 30-year-old played for the Boston Bruins last season. He skated in 26 games, recording 3 goals and 2 assists for 5 points, while he’s skated in 155 career NHL games.
Maple Leafs Not Ruling Out Adding More Players
Toronto has some intriguing roster battles going on, but the Maple Leafs aren’t ruling out making another move.
The Maple Leafs still have cap space, so general manager Brad Treliving isn’t ruling out Toronto adding more players.
“Step one right now is seeing what we have in camp,” Treliving said on Real Kyper & Bourne. “I know everybody’s focused on that one spot, and certainly we are, but you don’t know where chemistry is going to come from. You can put it on paper, but until you get on the ice and see who fits with who, you don’t know…
“We’re going to continue to look internally while also continuing to look outside and see if there’s an availability for somebody that can come in and help us,” Treliving added.
The Maple Leafs have just over $1.1 million in cap space.
Craig Berube is a Fan of Offseason Moves
Toronto made a ton of moves this offseason, and Maple Leafs coach Craig Berube is eager for his potential lineup.
Berube says the team has a new look and did change the DNA, so he’s happy with what Treliving did.
“We lost a player, a real good player here, but we added three new players to our lineup, and I’m excited about that,” Berube said. “I know Tre talked about DNA last year, and I thought he did a hell of a job changing that over the summer, adding these players. So I’m excited to see where they fit in and how they look. It’s a change, we all know that. Losing Mitch and bringing in three new players, it’s a change, for sure. What excites me is I don’t have to hear ‘Core Four’ anymore.”
The Maple Leafs open their season on Oct. 8 against the Montreal Canadiens.
