One of the most interesting NHL trade rumors to come out of this deadline season has involved Calgary Flames blueliner MacKenzie Weegar. While the Flames weren’t necessarily shopping him, contenders have inquired about his availability.
Now, it seems the Flames are getting ready to make a deal happen. According to TSN’s Darren Dreger, the Utah Mammoth could be the club to land the 32-year-old blueliner.
Talk about Weegar going to the Ottawa Senators had picked up. But then, NHL trade rumors pivoted, suggesting that Weegar would not waive his no-trade clause for Ottawa.
That situation ramped up speculation, with now, the Mammoth being the apparent winners. For the Mammoth, substantial NHL trade rumors are nothing new. Earlier this week, a report in RG Media surfaced, detailing how the Mammoth have been one of the teams in on St. Louis Blues forward Robert Thomas.
According to Marco D’Amico, the Mammoth were willing to pay up big time for Thomas. Prospects like Caled Desnoyers, Tij Iginla, Daniil But, Dmitri Simashev, and Cole Beaudoin are some of the names floating around as potential pieces in the return for a star player.
Plus, the Mammoth have their first-round pick, three second-round selections, and two third-round picks in the 2026 NHL Draft. So, it’s worth considering that any of those picks could be part of the return.
Considering the price tag on some of the depth players this season, the Flames could really clean up here.
NHL Trade Rumors Do Not Include Tij Iginla
Calgary Flames fans might be excited about NHL trade rumors linking Weegar to Utah for one reason. One of the names believed to be on the block is Tij Iginla, son of Flames’ great Jarome Iginla.
The junior Iginla was the sixth overall pick in the 2024 NHL Draft. The Mammoth scooped him off the board before the Flames had the chance to take him. Still, there has always been an inkling for fans hoping to see a second-generation star make his mark in Calgary.
Iginla would be a fantastic fit for the Flames. The 19-year-old is currently lighting up in the WHL with the Kelowna Rockets. He’s scored 36 goals and 71 points in 39 games. That’s a fantastic stat line that makes these NHL trade rumors all the more tantalizing for Flames fans.
Mammoth Have Legit Need on the Blue Line
Since moving to Utah, the Mammoth have prioritized landing a big name on their blue line. One of the first NHL trade rumors to materialize was the deal that landed Mikhail Sergachev from the Tampa Bay Lightning.
While Sergachev and Sean Durzi have been good, the Mammoth know they’ll need more. Their bottom four defensemen don’t necessarily inspire fear in the hearts of opponents. Plus, the Mammoth are on a collision course with either the Colorado Avalanche or Vegas Golden Knights in the first round of the 2026 Stanley Cup playoffs.
Assuming the Mammoth hold on to the first wild card spot, that situation could mean going up against the Golden Knights. If they fall to the second, it’ll be the Avalanche. Either opponent is hardly an easy out.
That’s why these NHL trade rumors make sense. The Mammoth have a real need to bolster their lineup in any way they can.
UPDATE: The official deal is Weegar going to Utah in exchange for veteran defenseman Olli Maatta, prospect Jonathan Castagna, and three second-round picks in the 2026 NHL Draft.
