Vancouver Canucks rumors were in high gear at the 2026 NHL trade deadline. Pundits believed the club would make a big splash. However, only two relatively minor trades went down, leaving Canucks wondering what could have been.
Well, in the post-deadline fallout, chatter has emerged suggesting that the Canucks were eyeing a Carolina Hurricanes forward.
As insider Elliotte Friedman noted in the Saturday edition of the 32 Thoughts Podcast, the Canucks were looking into Carolina forward Jesperi Kotkaniemi.
“I do think they considered Jesperi Kotkaniemi… I’d heard that the best chance for him to get traded was there.”
Now, it’s unclear whether this trade would have been a standalone trade involving Kotkaniemi heading to Vancouver or if the Finnish forward would have been part of a larger deal.
Canucks rumors have suggested the team is looking for depth down the middle as part of their rebuild. The club actually dealt one center, David Kampr, to the Washington Capitals for a sixth-round pick.
But beyond that, it seems the Canucks were looking to add a potential top-six center to play behind Marco Rossi and Elias Pettersson.
It’s also unclear how close a deal was. Perhaps the two sides just ran out of time to get something done this season. If talks were truly serious, there’s a chance that the Canucks and Hurricanes might circle back to this deal in the offseason.
Canucks Rumors Involving Kotkaniemi Nothing New
Vancouver Canucks rumors involving Jesperi Kotkaniemi are nothing new. Earlier this year, some chatter emerged suggesting the Hurricanes were looking at Elias Pettersson. There were various degrees of certainty regarding this deal.
But one common theme was Kotkaniemi heading to Vancouver as part of the return. So, there does seem to be some credence to the talk involving the 25-year-old heading to Vancouver.
The former third-overall pick from the 2018 NHL Draft hasn’t really had much success in Carolina. The Canes famously plucked him via an offer sheet back in 2021, but he hasn’t really gotten much traction since joining the Hurricanes.
In 37 games this season, Kotkaniemi has two goals and nine points. That production is hardly commensurate with his $4.82 million cap hit. Still, the Hurricanes hope that the former Canadiens draft pick holds some value. Who knows if there may be more these Canucks rumors beyond just chatter.
Kotkaniemi’s Contract Likely Getting in the Way
The 800-pound gorilla getting in the way of trading Kotkaniemi is his contract. If Canucks rumors are to be true, the team would have to take on the remaining four years of his deal. While the rising cap has made Kotkaniemi’s current cap hit less daunting, it’s still too big to trade.
If the deal had one or two years left on it, trading the 25-year-old would be much easier. However, with four years left, any interested party would be looking for some retention on the Hurricanes’ part.
That seems unlikely. That’s why Canucks rumors involving Kotkaniemi could mean swapping complicated contracts, such as Pettersson-for-Kotkaniemi, or a standalone deal in which the Hurricanes dump Kotkaniemi’s contract on the Canucks while Vancouver gets a sweetener for the favor.
If Carolina is truly eager to get rid of Kotkaniemi, it wouldn’t be surprising to hear Canucks rumors pick up again in the offseason.
