The Vancouver Canucks have had a horrible 2025-26 season. The Pacific Division club currently has an 18-31-6 record and is at the bottom of the NHL standings with just 42 points.
With the Canucks struggling in such a major way this season, they have already started to sell. They most notably traded superstar defenseman Quinn Hughes to the Minnesota Wild back in December. The Canucks then followed that up by trading forward Kiefer Sherwood to the San Jose Sharks last month. However, with the Canucks officially beginning a rebuild, they are expected to trade more of their players by the deadline.
One Canucks player who has been creating a ton of chatter in the rumor mill is forward Evander Kane. The 34-year-old winger is in the final season of his four-year, $20.5 million contract and is standing out as a prime rental candidate for contenders because of it. The Canucks have also given Kane’s agent permission to seek a trade, as reported by CHEK’s Rick Dhaliwal. Thus, a Kane trade is expected.
With this, we here at Heavy Sports have a trade pitch that would have the Canucks send Kane to the NHL’s best team, the Colorado Avalanche.
Avalanche Get:
- Evander Kane (50% retained)
Canucks Get:
- 2028 Third-Round Pick
- 2026 Seventh-Round Pick
Avalanche Has Been Linked to Canucks’ Evander Kane
The Avalanche are currently at the top of the NHL standings with a 36-8-9 record and 81 points. Due to this, they are standing out as clear buyers ahead of the 2026 NHL trade deadline. They have also already been connected to Kane this season.
Recently, ESPN’s Kevin Weekes reported that the Avalanche and Dallas Stars are two top potential landing spots for Kane.
“Per multiple sources, I’m told the Dallas Stars and Colorado Avalanche are among the likely destinations for Canucks forward Evander Kane via potential trade,” Weekes posted on X.
Hearing that the Canucks are interested in Kane is not necessarily surprising. When noting that he is a hard-nosed forward who contributes offensively, he could work nicely in the Avalanche’s bottom six if successfully acquired. When looking for a specific spot in the Avalanche’s lineup for Kane, he could be a nice pickup for their third line with Jack Drury and Joel Kiviranta.
Kane would also give the Avalanche another option to work with on their second power play unit if acquired.
Canucks’ Kane Should Generate Plenty of Interest
While the Avalanche and Stars are two specific teams that have been linked to Kane, more clubs are likely to enter the mix for the veteran forward. This is especially so when noting that he has a ton of playoff experience, as evidenced by his 97 career postseason games. This included him playing in 41 playoff games over the last two years with the Edmonton Oilers alone.
Overall, if a contender is looking for more toughness and secondary offensive production, it would not be surprising if they reached out to the Canucks about Kane. With this, the Avalanche should have competition for his services.
In 54 games so far this season with the Canucks, Kane has recorded nine goals, 16 assists, 25 points, and 89 hits.
