NHL Trade: Canucks Swing Deal For 6-Foot-1 Young Defender

Jack Thompson
The Canucks have acquired Jack Thompson from the Sharks.

The Vancouver Canucks are one of the NHL’s most notable sellers heading toward the 2026 NHL trade deadline. The Canucks have already made one notable move this week, as they traded Tyler Myers to the Dallas Stars. However, more of their players are expected to be on the move by the deadline.

The Canucks have many trade candidates to watch as we get closer to the deadline. Among them include Jake DeBrusk, Conor Garland, Brock Boeser, Teddy Blueger, Evander Kane, and David Kampf. With this, the Canucks could end up having a very different-looking roster once we get to Friday at 3 p.m. ET.

However, the Canucks have now made an interesting trade by bringing in a young defenseman from the San Jose Sharks.

Canucks Acquire Jack Thompson From Sharks in Exchange for Jett Woo

The Canucks have added a new young defenseman to their group, as they have acquired blueliner Jack Thompson from the Sharks in exchange for longtime AHL defenseman Jett Woo. With this, the Canucks and Sharks have both added new blueliners to their systems.

Yet, out of the two defensemen traded in this deal, Thompson is arguably the more interesting one. At just 23 years old, there is still time for Thompson to tap into his potential more, and he could very well do that joining a rebuilding club like the Canucks.

Thompson has 34 games of NHL experience on his resume, but he has not played at the NHL level this season. Instead, Thompson has played all of this season at the AHL level, where he has recorded three goals, nine assists, 12 points, and a plus-13 rating in 42 games.

Woo, on the other hand, spent the entirety of his time with the Canucks organization at the AHL level. He has yet to make his NHL debut, but has had a long career in the AHL. In 293 career AHL games over six seasons, he has recorded 22 goals, 69 assists, 91 points, 410 penalty minutes, and a plus-21 rating.

Woo was selected by the Canucks with the 37th overall pick of the 2018 NHL Entry Draft. With this, he was in the Canucks’ system for a long time, but now he will be getting a fresh start with the Sharks organization with this trade.

Canucks Should Not Be Done Making Trades Yet

While this has the potential to be a solid move for the Canucks, there is no question that they should have more trades on the way. With the Canucks being the worst team in the NHL and committing to a rebuild, there is a real chance that multiple of their NHL-caliber players will find new homes this week.

It is going to be interesting to see what other trades the Canucks make from here, but Thompson could have a shot of getting some chances with Vancouver before the season is over.
