Winnipeg Jets and Team USA goalie Connor Hellebuyck settled an intense debate once and for all. Following last Sunday’s gold-medal win at the 2026 Winter Olympics, Hellebuyck emerged vindicated after coming up short several times before.

In particular, the 32-year-old proved he’s the best goaltender in the world. That’s no easy claim to stake. But coming up huge in one of the biggest games on the world stage is enough to prove his worth.

The American netminder went into the Olympic final looking to secure the United States’ first gold in nearly five decades. Hellebuyck came out the other side a champion. But it wasn’t that he made two or three big saves. He survived the onslaught that came from a top-heavy Canadian side.

All told, Hellebuyck stopped 41 of 42 shots, including making several key saves. However, none was bigger than the desperate save he made on Colorado Avalanche defenseman Devon Toews. Toews had an open net and proceeded to tip the puck into the open net. However, the Jets’ netminder reached back and got just enough with his goal stick to deflect the puck away.

When the dust finally settled, Hellebuyck bought his team enough time to find a way to win the biggest game of their lives.

Could Olympic Win Break Hellebuyck’s Postseason Curse?

One of the biggest criticisms surrounding Hellebuyck is his inability to win big postseason games. While this season may not provide an opportunity to get over that postseason hump, there’s reason to believe the netminder could break his playoff curse.

Often, professional athletes need to win in order to prove to themselves that they can do it. Those victories may come as part of a broader situation before proving they can win individually.

That’s where Hellebuyck could be at this point. His ability to win as part of a stacked team could be the catalyst to prove he can lead his team to a Stanley Cup.

It’s worth pointing out that there’s a huge difference between the Winnipeg Jets and Team USA. But the seeds could be there to germinate into a lights-out playoff run.

Stanley Cup May Come Elsewhere

It may sound callous, but Hellebuyck’s best chance to win a Stanley Cup could come elsewhere. The reason being that a lights-out goaltender can only take a team so far. Historic precedents have proven that a mind-shocking performance by a goaltender may not always be enough to lead a team to a Cup.

For instance, Dominik Hasek, as amazing as he was, could not single-handedly win a Cup with the Buffalo Sabres. He came awfully close. But in the end, hockey is a team sport. And Hasek could not garner enough support to win a big game.

It wasn’t until Hasek was part of a much more talented Detroit Red Wings team that he was able to win. He didn’t have to stand on his head, but his efforts were enough to finally get him a Stanley Cup.

That could be the fate befalling Hellebuyck. He may need to move on to get that coveted Cup. But for now, Connor Hellebuyck has proven, beyond a shadow of a doubt, he’s the best goalie in the world.
