US' Lindsey Vonn is transported by helicopter after crashing in the women's downhill event during the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games at the Tofane Alpine Skiing Centre in Cortina d'Ampezzo on February 8, 2026.

Olympic officials and fans received their clearest medical picture yet of Lindsey Vonn’s condition after her terrifying downhill crash, as a Reuters report confirmed the U.S. ski icon underwent surgery following the high-speed accident at the Winter Games.

According to the report, hospital officials said a helicopter transported Vonn from Cortina d’Ampezzo to Ca’ Foncello Hospital in the northern Italian city of Treviso, where doctors provided orthopedic treatment for injuries she sustained during Sunday’s women’s downhill.

“In the afternoon, she underwent orthopedic surgery to stabilise the fracture sustained in her left leg,” the hospital said in a statement, via Reuters.

A source told Reuters that Vonn was later transferred to the intensive care unit, where she is under observation. The Reuters source stressed there was no threat to her life, adding that the ICU placement was partly intended to provide greater privacy for the four-time World Cup overall champion.

The update marked a significant development following one of the most harrowing moments of the Milan Cortina Olympics when Vonn’s daring return to Olympic competition ended abruptly in a violent crash.

Lindsey Vonn Airlifted After Olympic Crash

Vonn, 41, lost control early in her downhill run on the Cortina course, went airborne at speed and slammed hard into the snow. She remained down for several minutes, visibly in distress, as medical personnel rushed onto the course.

Officials immobilized her on a backboard, secured her to a gurney and airlifted her by helicopter to Treviso as the finish area fell silent. The crash immediately overshadowed the remainder of the event and sent shockwaves through the alpine skiing world.

Vonn had been competing just nine days after rupturing the ACL in her left knee, a decision that drew enormous attention — and concern — heading into the race.

Reuters Report Provides Clarity After Uncertainty

In the immediate aftermath of the crash, officials offered few specifics beyond confirming that Vonn was receiving medical care.

“Update: Lindsey Vonn sustained an injury, but is in stable condition and in good hands with a team of American and Italian physicians,” the U.S. Ski & Snowboard said in a statement.

The Reuters report provided the first authoritative details on the severity of her injuries and the steps taken to stabilize her condition.

The confirmation of surgery underscored the violence of the impact and the physical toll of downhill skiing at Olympic speeds, where racers can exceed 80 miles per hour on steep, icy terrain.

The hospital statement did not specify the exact nature of the fracture or a recovery timeline.

A Daring Olympic Comeback Meets Harsh Reality

Vonn’s presence at these Games was already one of the most compelling storylines of the Winter Olympics. A three-time Olympic medalist with 84 World Cup victories, she came out of retirement after undergoing a partial knee replacement last year, describing herself as pain-free for the first time in years.

Her comeback accelerated rapidly when she qualified for the Olympic team — and intensified further when she tore her ACL less than two weeks before the downhill. Despite the injury, Vonn elected to race, embracing the risks inherent in the sport she has long defined.

That gamble ended in a horrific crash on Sunday, raising immediate questions about the future of one of alpine skiing’s most decorated careers.
