Nobody thought that Jake Canter would be on the podium going into his final run in the men’s slopestyle snowboarding event. That’s because he was in 10th place after the first and second runs of the event. But the 22-year-old first-time Olympian took to his final run with guns ablaze and gave it everything he had for an Olympic debut, added extra rotations to his jumps, and now he’s an Olympic medalist!
China’s Su Yiming scooped up the gold medal, the same day that is also Yiming’s birthday, and Japan’s Taiga Hasegawa won the silver medal. However, Canter’s performance was by far the most impressive of the final and third run of the men’s event, and his bronze medal finish had the entire spectator section jumping and cheering along with him when he received his podium-worthy score.
