Kaillie Humphries is a three-time Olympic gold medalist and one of the most decorated female bobsledders in history. The Team USA star added another medal to her résumé at the Milan Cortina Games, where she won bronze in the women’s monobob, behind Elana Meyers Taylor’s gold. Off the track, Humphries shares her life with husband Travis Armbruster, a former bobsledder who has supported her record-setting career through major transitions and personal milestones. Here’s what you need to know.
Kaillie Humphries and Travis Armbruster Share a Bobsled Background
Humphries and Armbruster understand elite competition because both competed at the highest level. Armbruster is a former professional bobsledder who raced for Team USA.
He attended Pittsburg State University, where he played football and competed in track and field. After earning a degree in Fitness and Kinesiology, he began working as a personal trainer. In 2009, he was recruited to the USA bobsled team and won two medals at the 2010 North American Cup, including four-man gold.
Their shared experience in sliding sports helped shape their relationship and mutual support system.
Kaillie Humphries Switched Countries After Marrying Armbruster
After representing Canada at the 2010, 2014 and 2018 Olympic Winter Games — winning two gold medals and one bronze — Humphries made a career-defining decision.
In 2019, she switched allegiance to represent the United States, where she had already been living with Armbruster. She later became a U.S. citizen and won gold for Team USA in the first-ever Olympic women’s monobob event at the 2022 Beijing Games.
With that victory, Humphries became the first woman in Olympic history to win gold medals for two different countries.
Travis Armbruster Proposed in 2018
After dating for several years, Armbruster proposed in 2018. Humphries shared the engagement news publicly and the couple married in 2019.
Their partnership soon extended beyond sport. Humphries has spoken openly about how Armbruster prioritized her career.
“Travis, thankfully, has given up his career and his goals and dreams to allow me to follow mine,” Humphries said. “So it’s really great because now I get to live out my dream.”
Kaillie Humphries Opened Up About IVF and Endometriosis
When the couple decided to start a family, Humphries was diagnosed with endometriosis, a condition that can make conception more difficult. They turned to IVF while continuing her training.
“I definitely had times when I doubted it if ever was going to happen,” Humphries told The San Diego Union-Tribune. “Then there were times I wouldn’t question it, because we knew we were never going to give up until it did.”
Their persistence paid off.
The Couple Are Parents to Son Aulden
Humphries and Armbruster welcomed their son, Aulden, on June 14. After his birth, Humphries shared her joy.
“My favorite thing is just his smile, his eyes, they’re so blue,” Humphries said per NBC Sports. “Every time I look at him — I know I’m biased — but I just think he’s the cutest baby in the entire world. I just feel so blessed to be able to be a mom, to have gone through pregnancy, for him to be healthy, me to be healthy.”
She added that becoming a mother while competing at an elite level feels meaningful. Armbruster now focuses on supporting their family while Humphries continues her Olympic journey, proving their partnership extends well beyond the sled.
