American figure skater Ilia Malinin‘s failure to reach the podium in the men’s individual competition at the 2026 Winter Olympics is one of the biggest shockers in the sport’s history.
After going undefeated in 14 consecutive competitions and helping Team USA win gold, he entered the individual free skate with a five-point lead over second place. However, the world’s No. 1-ranked skater fell multiple times and received his worst score (246.49) since the U.S. International Classic in 2022.
The 21-year-old finished in eighth place.
Malinin earned praise for how he composed himself after the heartbreaking results. The “Quad God” approached gold medalist Mikhail Shaidorov of Kazakhstan and congratulated him on his achievement. Malinin took full responsibility for his performance.
“The nerves just went, so overwhelming, and especially going into that starting pose,” he told reporters. “I just felt like all the traumatic moments of my life really just started flooding my head. So many negative thoughts that flooded into there and I could not handle it.”
A few days later, Malinin revealed there’s much more to the story.
Ilia Malinin Called His Olympic Meltdown ‘Inevitable’ in a Vulnerable Statement
A few days after the most crushing day of his skating career, Malinin revealed his mental breakdown was “inevitable,” which immediately turned heads. He posted on Instagram, “On the world’s biggest stage, those who appear the strongest may still be fighting invisible battles on the inside.
“Even your happiest memories can end up tainted by the noise. Vile online hatred attacks the mind and fear lures it into the darkness, no matter how hard you try to stay sane through the endless insurmountable pressure. It all builds up as these moments flash before your eyes, resulting in an inevitable crash.
“This is that version of the story. Coming February 21, 2026.”
Malnin is slated to perform in the Olympics’ figure skating gala on February 21. The young phenom also teased another personal announcement on that date. He already announced his plan to compete at the World Championships in Prague next month.

Before making his Olympic debut, Malinin admitted that the pressure of the Olympic Games can be a lot.
“A lot of the times, it is a lot to handle when you have all the pressure, all the attention, all the focus on you to become the Olympic gold hopeful,” Malinin told USA Today on February 4. “A lot of the time, I’ll have bad days where I think about that and it really shuts me down, and it really puts me in not the best moods.
“That’s something that everyone has to go through, and they have to find their way to motivate themselves or keep them together.”
Malinin told reporters after his disastrous skate that “all the traumatic moments of my life” flooded his head before he started his routine. “It was really just something that overwhelmed me, and I just felt like I had no control,” he added.
