The U.S. men’s hockey team didn’t plan to celebrate Olympic gold in South Florida.
But thanks to a winter storm, a rerouted flight — and a six-figure surprise from Pat McAfee — the party ended up exactly there.
Less than 24 hours after capturing the United States’ first Olympic men’s hockey gold medal in 46 years at the 2026 Winter Olympics, Team USA found itself in Miami on Monday night, turning a travel detour into one of the most viral off-ice moments of the Games.
Originally scheduled to fly into New York City, the team’s return plans were altered when snowstorms snarled travel across the Northeast, forcing a reroute to Florida, according to TSN reporter Chris Johnston. What followed was an impromptu celebration that quickly took on a life of its own.
‘Tonight, All of Your Drinks Are on Me’
The celebration centered at E11EVEN, where players arrived still riding the emotional high of their dramatic gold-medal run in Italy.
Midway through the night, McAfee appeared via video on the club’s massive LED screens with a message that immediately shifted the tone.
“Boys, thank you for representing the United States of America in such a great way,” McAfee said. “Tonight, all of your drinks are on me.”
He followed through.
By the end of the night, McAfee had reportedly covered a bar tab that ballooned to roughly $150,000, as players celebrated with cigars, premium champagne and bottle service befitting the moment.
From NFL Punter to Media Mogul
McAfee’s gesture fit the arc of a career that has increasingly blurred the line between sports, entertainment and spectacle.
A former NFL punter, McAfee spent eight seasons with the Indianapolis Colts before pivoting into broadcasting following his retirement. What began as guest appearances and live comedy shows evolved into The Pat McAfee Show, a daily program that married locker-room storytelling, sports analysis and viral moments and helped reshape modern sports media.
That success led McAfee to ESPN in 2023, where he signed a reported five-year, $85 million contract that brought The Pat McAfee Show to the network while allowing him to retain creative control. Since then, McAfee has become a fixture across ESPN programming, including College GameDay and NFL studio coverage.
That blend of patriotism and showmanship was on display Monday night as McAfee chose to celebrate Team USA’s Olympic breakthrough not from a studio desk, but by underwriting a night the players won’t forget.
From Overtime Heroics to a Clubwide Anthem
Inside the club, the celebration mirrored the scale of the achievement.
Bottles of Armand de Brignac “Ace of Spades” champagne were sprayed into the crowd. Players danced atop tables. At one point, the music cut out for a spontaneous, clubwide rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner.”
Leading the charge were team captain Auston Matthews, power forward Brady Tkachuk, and overtime hero Jack Hughes, who was still flashing a gap-toothed grin after losing his front teeth in the gold-medal game.
The moment underscored how quickly the team’s triumph had expanded beyond the ice, transforming into a broader cultural moment.
From Club to Capitol
The celebration didn’t linger long.
By Tuesday morning, most of the team boarded a government plane bound for Washington, D.C., shifting from nightclub lights to the national stage. The players visited the White House before heading to the U.S. Capitol, where they were recognized during the State of the Union address of President Donald Trump.
As the men’s hockey team was introduced, lawmakers from both parties rose for a standing ovation lasting roughly two minutes — a rare bipartisan response sparked by a shared Olympic triumph.
From overtime heroics in Milan to a six-figure bar tab in Miami, the U.S. men’s hockey team’s celebration reflected the scale of its achievement and the modern reality of Olympic fame.
