Savannah Guthrie has made her decision on hosting the 2026 Winter Olympics amid her mother’s sudden disappearance, a new report indicates.
Police in Pima County, Arizona, said the NBC broadcaster’s 84-year-old mother was taken against her will and remains missing, the news outlet reported on Monday.
“Police say they believe Savannah Guthrie’s 84-year-old mother, Nancy Guthrie, was taken from her home against her will before her family reported her missing from her Arizona residence the following day,” NBC reported.
The report added that Nancy Guthrie was last seen on Saturday night at her home outside Tucson, then was reported missing by her family at noon on Sunday.
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos told reporters at a news conference that they believe Nancy Guthrie was abducted.
“We believe she was taken out of the home against her will, and that’s how this investigation is moving,” Nanos told NBC News.
“I can’t think of the last time where in the middle of the night in someone’s bed, an 84-year-old woman disappeared on us,” he added.
Savannah Guthrie Dropping Out of Olympics
Amid her mother’s suspected abduction, Savannah Guthrie has pulled out of her plans to cover the 2026 Winter Olympics, which begin this week. The New York Post’s Page Six reported that Guthrie will not travel to Italy for the opening ceremonies on Friday.
“Savannah Guthrie is set to drop out of hosting the 2026 Winter Olympics opening ceremony for NBC as her mom, Nancy Guthrie, remains missing, Page Six can exclusively reveal. The ‘Today’ anchor, 54, was due to be in Italy for the start of the 2026 Games on Friday — where she was set to co-host the ceremony alongside Terry Gannon — but likely won’t be there, sources said,” the report noted.
The report went on to cite a source close to the broadcast outlet saying Guthrie will be remaining with family.
“There is no way Savannah will be there,” an NBC source told Page Six.
It is not yet clear who will replace Guthrie in NBC’s coverage of the Winter Olympics.
Savannah Guthrie Issues Statement
Guthrie has traveled to Arizona with other members of her family, and on Monday released a statement thanking everyone who supported her and asking for anyone with information on her mother’s disappearance to come forward
“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support,” she said. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear mom. We thank law enforcement for their hard work on this case and encourage anyone with information to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department at (520) 351-4900.”
While police have not released specific details, they said the evidence at Nancy Guthrie’s home is very concerning and points to the potential of foul play.
“You don’t typically get the sheriff out at a scene like this, but it’s very concerning what we’re learning from the house,” Nanos told reporters at the news conference on Monday.
Nanos added that many police have responded to the scene, including homicide detectives.
