For Brock Nelson, gold medal matchups at the Olympics is a storied legacy in his family. The NHL player for the Colorado Avalanche is one of 25 men representing Team USA at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina, and now he is the third generation of his family to face off in a gold medal game on the world stage.
Nelson has been playing center for the Avalanche since he was traded on March 6, 2025. Prior to then, he played for the New York Islanders after being drafted into the NHL in 2010. This is his Olympic debut, but he isn’t new to gold medal matchups at The Olympic Games. Both his uncle and his grandfather helped Team USA bring home the gold in two of the most iconic ice hockey games ever played. Now Brock Nelson has the opportunity to bring home gold for the United States one more time – to pay homage to both his family and his country.
Here’s what to know about Nelson’s gold medal heritage.

The United States won the game 4 – 3
There isn’t a more famous game in Olympic ice hockey than the 1980 match between the United States and the Soviet Union when Team USA shocked the world to win what is now known as the ‘Miracle on Ice’ game. Of the American men who worked together to upset the longstanding Soviet stronghold on international hockey, Brock Nelson’s uncle Dave Christian represented the United States wearing #30 on his jersey.
The 2026 gold medal game between the United States and Canada will be played on the 46th anniversary of the Miracle on Ice game on February 22, 1980.

Brock Nelson’s grandfather, Bill Christian, was the first in the family to win an Olympic gold medal in men’s ice hockey. Now 88-years-old, Christian was a forward on the famed 1960 U.S. team that won against the Soviet Union during the 1960 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, NY.
Just as tomorrow’s gold medal USA versus Canada match will be played 46 years to the day of the 1980 Miracle on Ice game, the legendary Lake Placid win against the Soviet Union was played on February 22, 1960. This means that Brock Nelson will be playing for gold on the anniversaries of both his uncle’s and his grandfather’s gold medal wins.
