AEW star Big Bill (formerly known as Big Cass in WWE) is expected to enter free agency and could return to WWE. Fightful reported that Big Bill’s contract is scheduled to expire at the end of May or in the start of June. AEW has primarily used Big Bill in tag team or stable acts throughout his tenure in the promotion. Big Bill recently was part of Chris Jericho’s Learning Tree faction, but Jericho has changed course to a face act since his return on a new deal.
Sean Ross Sapp shared the following statement via Fightful:
“Sources that myself and Fightful Select spoke to last month believed that Big Bill’s AEW contract was up at the end of May or start of June.”
More news will likely come out to confirm the exact timing, and reports will ultimately reveal about his next plan. WWE used Big Bill as Big Cass for a successful NXT tenure and a short run on the main roster.
However, things didn’t work out and led to him having to make drastic changes to repair his life after getting released. Both AEW and WWE would have interest in signing Big Bill to a contract since he’s among the more athletic big men today.
Why Big Bill Left WWE Last Time
WWE called up Big Cass from NXT with Enzo Amore as his tag team partner. Both men were among the most over performers in the NXT brand for years. A call-up did see some success with the bigger live crowds reciting their promos and chanting along with them before matches.
Vince McMahon ended the tag team faster than expected to push Big Cass on his own. An injury during his first major feud against Big Show led to Big Cass having to return with less momentum.
A controversial moment breaking the script to kick a little person pretending to be Bryan Danielson caused him to get fired. Big Cass working against a main eventer like Bryan could have made him a star, but the personal issues and breaking of rules caused a disaster.
Would WWE Bring Big Bill Back?
AEW has not used Big Bill in a major role in quite some time, with his peak coming years ago teaming with Ricky Starks. The duo won the AEW World Tag Team Championship, but Big Bill has struggled to find an ideal role to get pushed since then.
WWE historically sees more value in “big men” workers, and Big Bill is still athletic enough to contribute to that regard. Battles with addiction saw Big Bill cleaning up his life years ago and claiming that his overall goal was to return to WWE for a better run.
However, things changed and he ended up working for other promotions to repair his image. TNA utilized Big Bill to remind the wrestling world of his value, and he found success by becoming a part of the AEW roster. WWE could easily bring Big Cass back for a run with his mental health a lot better and him looking for one more chance at his dream job.
