WWE star Becky Lynch revealed that she thinks AEW’s Mercedes Mone may return to the company in the future. Mone wrestled for years in WWE under the Sasha Banks name and accomplished many great things. Both Lynch and Mone became top stars as part of the “women’s evolution” changing the WWE landscape with more opportunities for women.
Wrestling Observer transcribed Becky’s words about fellow WWE star Charlotte Flair naming the “four horsewomen” as the greatest women in company history:
“I honestly can’t disagree. That’s a great answer. We’re a great foursome. Never really aligned altogether, but we did great work. We’re still doing great work. We’re all doing great work.
Well, we’re not all here, and you know, the door is always open, I think, for Sasha. So, I think that that is one of those things that you can always go back to at any time, and it’ll always be fantastic.”
WWE stars rarely talk about AEW talents in interviews since the upstart company started in 2019 and presented the biggest threat since WCW went under in 2001. Mone is rarely referenced by WWE these days, so it is surprising that Becky went out of her way to name drop the former rival.
Why Mercedes Mone Left WWE For AEW
Lynch, Mone, Charlotte Flair, and Bayley represented the “four horsewomen” of new talents changing the industry together. Mone is the only the one to ever leave WWE for another promotion when she wrestled for New Japan. However, AEW came calling with a big contract offer to make her one of the faces of the company.
Mone initially left WWE in controversial fashion by “walking out” during a live show with tag team partner Naomi. Disagreement over booking plans saw both Mercedes and Naomi feeling disrespected to leave and vacate the Women’s Tag Team Championship.
Unhappiness with the WWE creative team led to Mone making her impact outside of WWE and ultimately becoming a home run signing for AEW. Mercedes felt it was more important to find happiness and make a mark outside of the biggest company, and it has paid off.
Chances Of Mercedes Mone Returning To WWE
Lynch’s comment is not crazy since most major talents to leave WWE in controversial fashion often have a big return. Steve Austin, Bret Hart, and CM Punk all overcame personal issues with management to have a big comeback moment after the drama.
Mone’s former tag partner Naomi even returned from the ugly departure and has been pushed harder than ever before leaving the on-screen product due to a pregnancy. The option will be there for Mercedes to return to WWE whenever her AEW contract officially expires to make her a free agent.
Tony Khan has pushed Mone as one of the top stars in the company with a dominant TBS Championship reign and a tour winning over a dozen international titles. However, the WWE return can finish her original story with dream matches galore. Mercedes has control over future and could easily return to WWE to end her career working with the four horsemen, like Lynch suggested.
