Chelsea have been handed a significant attacking blow. Manager Xabi Alonso confirmed on Tuesday that João Pedro will be out for “a few weeks” with a thigh injury, leaving the Blues short of firepower at the worst possible moment. The Brazilian picked up the problem in training on Friday and missed Saturday’s 2-0 home defeat to Tottenham, Chelsea’s first home loss to Spurs since April 2018.
João Pedro Injury: Chelsea Get the Grim Confirmation
Alonso didn’t sugarcoat it. “He has an injury on his thigh and he is going to be out for a few weeks,” the Chelsea boss told reporters ahead of Wednesday’s trip to Anfield. “Let’s see how many; we don’t want to predict on that, but he’s not ready for the next games.” It’s a notable shift from his tone just days earlier, when he’d described the issue more cautiously: “At the moment has some liquid, so we have to do some tests to know how big the injury is. It’s disappointing, but we need to carry on.” The tests came back worse than hoped.
Pedro has been Chelsea’s most consistent attacker this season, five goals and three assists across six Premier League starts, and he’s quietly become the one player Chelsea genuinely cannot replace in form. He’d already missed one match this season, the away trip to Brentford in September, with a knee issue that also forced him to withdraw from Brazil duty. Chelsea have now lost every league game he’s been unavailable for. Against Spurs, Alonso turned to Morgan Rogers as an emergency central striker, but it didn’t work, Rogers was peripheral throughout, and Chelsea failed to register a shot worth remembering.
Palmer’s Suspension Makes a Bad Week Worse
Compounding the problem is Cole Palmer’s suspension. The England international was sent off for two yellow cards against Tottenham and will miss the trip to Anfield for Wednesday’s Carabao Cup last-16 tie. Losing both Pedro and Palmer in the same week strips Chelsea of their two most creative, goal-threatening players in the final third, right before back-to-back fixtures that demand exactly that: Liverpool in the cup, then Manchester United at home on Saturday.
Alonso insisted his squad is deep enough to cope. “He’s a key player. We will miss him, but we will have to be ready to deal with the injury and to be competitive… looking for solutions, not looking for excuses.”

Emegha’s Long-Awaited Chance
One of those solutions could finally be summer signing Emmanuel Emegha. The 23-year-old, 6-foot-5 Dutch striker joined from sister club Strasbourg but hasn’t played a single minute for Chelsea after suffering a hamstring injury in pre-season. Alonso confirmed Emegha has recovered and is in the matchday squad for Liverpool, alongside Danny Welbeck and Estêvão. “It’s important that we have him available because he has special qualities,” Alonso said. “He’s been training for the last couple of weeks in a good way… maybe tomorrow he has the chance to play.” Welbeck, 35, offers the safer, more experienced option and has started both of Chelsea’s previous Carabao Cup ties this season, but Emegha’s pace, height and Ligue 1 goal record make him the far more intriguing experiment if Alonso wants a genuinely different profile up top.
Chelsea’s attack suddenly looks a lot thinner than it did a week ago. How Alonso solves the problem over the next two matches, starting tonight at Anfield, will say a great deal about just how much depth he’s actually built.
