Chelsea was handed major sanctions by the Premier League.

The Premier League just announced massive sanctions for one of the most storied EPL clubs. Chelsea has been handed a one-year transfer ban from signing first-team players, but this has been suspended for two years pending the club not committing more violations during this period.

Additionally, the Premier League has levied a sizable $13.7 million fine to Chelsea, per The Athletic. The punishment comes as part of an investigation regarding under-the-table payments to players that occurred during the previous ownership.

Chelsea is believed to have gotten a lesser punishment after the current BlueCo ownership group self-reported the violations that occurred under the prior administration.

“We believe at least six suspect payments to offshore companies connected to transfers were identified,” Sky Sports detailed on March 16, 2026, following the announcement. “So this is all to do with payments which were made off the books to agents, for instance, and other people connected with transfers under Chelsea’s previous ownership.

“The seven-figure payments were not in the accounts which the club submitted to the football authorities at the time. Now, all clubs have to provide the FA and Premier League accurate financial information every year and the same applies for UEFA if clubs are playing in their competitions.”

Here’s how the latest Premier League news is expected to impact Chelsea.

Chelsea Has ‘Serious Concerns’ About Manager Liam Rosenior Sparking Firing Rumors: Insider

It has been a string of unfortunate days for Chelsea. The news comes following a blowout 5-2 loss to PSG in the first leg of the team’s Champions League competition. Additionally, Chelsea was handed a 1-0 defeat by Newcastle days later.

The club’s struggles has rumors already swirling that Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior could be fired just months after eing hired to replace Enzo Maresca in January. Sky Sports Switzerland’s Sacha Tavolieri reported that Chelsea decision makers have “serious concerns” about Rosenior, putting his future in doubt.

“According to several sources close to the London club, serious concerns are emerging internally regarding the English manager’s ability to lead the sporting project in the long term,” Tavolieri wrote in a March 15, story titled, “Is Liam Rosenior already in danger at Chelsea?”

“Some influential figures within the Blues’ hierarchy even believe that Rosenior may no longer be in charge next season, a scenario that is gaining traction as media and sporting pressure mounts around Stamford Bridge, where there is a desperate search for stability and results commensurate with the club’s ambitions.”

How Does the Ban Work for Chelsea?

In reality, Chelsea’s punishment sounds harsher than it could turn out to be, assuming the club is on their best behavior. Chelsea is still able to sign players, unless another violation occurs.

“So the bottom line is that Chelsea have been fined £10.75 million (pounds) in total by the Premier League and this one-year transfer ban,” Sky Sports noted. “I mean, that would be very, very serious and that would have a big effect on Chelsea’s first team.

“But the really important thing is that it is suspended for two years. So Chelsea will still be able to sign players in the summer and also the next winter window, of course, as long as they don’t do anything wrong,” Sky Sports added.

“And I think the reason that it is not an outright ban and it’s a suspended ban is that because these irregularities were self-reported by the club’s new owners.”
