Alexander “Sascha” Zverev punched his ticket to the 2026 Madrid Open final after defeating Alexander Blockx 6-2, 7-5 in the semifinals.
He’ll face Jannik Sinner in the final on May 3, an opponent he hasn’t defeated since 2023. “To win the biggest tournaments in the world, you have to beat the best. And Jannik is the best in the world right now,” Zverev said of the Italian superstar.
“Generally, I’m feeling well. I look forward to the final,” Zverev told Tennis Channel ahead of the final. “I think it’s going to be a very tough match.”

Considering Sinner is on a historic hot streak this year, on to win his fifth straight Masters 1000 title, the 29-year-old needs to be at his best to pull off an upset. Supporting Zverev from afar during this tournament is his longtime girlfriend, Sophia Thomalla.
While Thomalla can’t be at Caja Mágica on Sunday, she has a very good reason.

Thomalla was able to support Zverev at the BMW Open in Munich before jetting off the Thailand to film the latest season of Germany’s “Are You the One?” reality series. She posted on Instagram to announce the news, “New Season, new me ✂️🤷🏼♀️,” also revealing she got bangs.
Throughout Zverev’s run in Manzanares Park, the reality show host has shared several photos on location in Koh Samui. The 36-year-old has hosted the show since 2021.
When she’s not filming, Thomalla makes it to as many of Zverev’s matches as possible. She recently watched him compete at Indian Wells and the Miami Open in March.

Zverev, a two-time Madrid Open champion, finally broke his semifinal curse in Spain. In the past seven Masters 1000 tournaments, he’s lost in the semifinals six times.
French tennis star Marion Bartoli said of his struggles, “Absolutely an anomaly to not see him play a final so far this year, and I’m really pleased for him to be back into a final and facing the toughest opponent you can possibly face now, which is Jannik Sinner. But we are in for an absolute treat on Sunday, something not to miss for anything in the world.”
Winning his third title in Madrid is truly a daunting task against Sinner, who recently won his 350th ATP match after taking down Arthur Fils in straight sets in the semifinals. Should he be victorious, however, Zverev will be the second-most winningest player at the Madrid Open, tying Novak Djokovic.
