On Tuesday, news emerged that World No. 1 Jannik Sinner canceled his scheduled practice while awaiting the results of an MRI on his elbow.
While there’s been no word regarding the results of the MRI, Sinner’s coach, Darren Cahill, provided an update to fans.
During Tuesday’s Wimbledon 2025 broadcast on ESPN, Cahill indicated that Sinner got a light training session in on the indoor hard courts at SW19 despite the cancellation of his scheduled practice.
“No news on the MRI just yet. He had it earlier today and he can’t take a day off, so he wanted to touch the ball… So Simone and myself just fed him a few balls out of the basket.
“It’s not a bad thing sometimes [to practise on hard court]. The more you play on grass with the uneven bounces, the more your timing goes off… Agassi used to do it all the time… We’ve done that for a couple of years, so it wasn’t out of the ordinary.”
Despite the fact that there’s been no word on Sinner’s MRI results, the fact that the World No. 1 was feeling up for a light session seems to be a good sign ahead of his quarter-final meeting with Ben Shelton on Wednesday.
Coach Opens Up on How Elbow Injury Impacted Sinner Against Dimitrov
Throughout Jannik Sinner’s fourth round meeting with Grigor Dimitrov at SW19, the Italian star appeared to deal with the after-effects of a fall that took place in the very first game of the match.
Although the fall didn’t appear to be a bad one, upon further review, it was clear that Sinner landed awkwardly.
As Cahill pointed out on Tuesday, throughout the remainder of Sinner’s match against Dimitrov, the World No. 1’s average forehand and serve speeds were considerably slower than normal:
“We actually thought he’d hurt his wrist at the start, but he did bang the elbow on the ground and he felt his elbow throughout the entire match. And it was pretty sore afterwards.
“He lost about six or seven miles per hour on average speed off the forehand, and off the serve as well.”
Despite that, Cahill made it clear that he didn’t want to take anything away from Dimitrov, who he said played an “amazing” match up until his injury.
Jannik Sinner Reflects on Fall in First Set of Dimitrov Match
Following Grigor Dimitrov’s retirement on Monday, there was plenty of concern regarding Jannik Sinner’s status for his quarter-final meeting with Ben Shelton.
While speaking with members of the press following his match with Dimitrov, Sinner spoke openly about the situation:
“[It] was a quite unfortunate fall. I checked the videos a little bit and it didn’t seem like a tough one but I still felt it quite a lot, especially serve and forehands. I could feel it.”
You can see his comments in the video below begining at the one-minute mark.
While the tennis community anxiously awaits further news on the World No. 1, the fact that he was able to get a light training session in seems to be a good sign.
