Winfield and the Buccaneers agreed to terms Monday on a four-year, $81.1 million contract Monday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. Winfield's contract total of $81.1 million is not only the highest figure for a defensive back in NFL history, but Schefter reports that his deal's $45 million guaranteed his also the largest such sum to be earned by a safety. Tampa Bay placed the $17.1 million franchise tag on Winfield back in March, but that transaction was always a placeholder for long-term negotiations. The Buccaneers will pay a high price to keep the the All-Pro safety in town, proof of Winfield's position as an irreplaceable pillar of the team's secondary. He piled up a career-high 122 tackles (76 solo) across 17 regular-season games in 2023, to go with six sacks, three interceptions, 12 passes defensed, six forced fumbles and four fumbles recovered.
Tryon-Shoyinka will not have his fifth-year option picked up by the Buccaneers, Luke Easterling of USA Today reports. Tryon-Shoyinka will now enter the 2024 season in the final year of his rookie contract. Although it hasn't been all bad for the Washington product, he has yet to live up to the expectations of being the team's first-round selection in the 2021 Draft. However, he did post career highs with 45 combined tackles and five sacks last season, despite playing 250 fewer defensive snaps than he did in 2022.
Palmer and rookie third-round pick Jalen McMillan are the top candidates for Tampa Bay's No. 3 receiver job, Joshua Queipo of Pewter Report reports. Palmer, a 2023 sixth-round pick, held the role for nearly all of his rookie season, though he was perhaps miscast in the slot. New offensive coordinator Liam Coen said he wants to put Chris Godwin back in the slot as his primary alignment, which means the team's No. 3 receiver this upcoming season likely will play a majority of snaps outside. While that's perhaps good news for Palmer given his 4.33 wheels, McMillan has decent speed in his own right (4.47) and is slightly taller and heavier (6-1, 197, compared to Palmer's 6-0, 192). There's also the matter of Palmer being a much later draft pick and then struggling with his opportunities as a rookie; he caught just 57.4 percent of his 68 targets and averaged 9.9 yards per catch, which works out to a RB-like 5.7 YPT.
Izien will cross-train at free safety during the offseason, according to safeties coach Nick Rapone, Scott Smith of the Buccaneers' official site reports. Izien spent most of last season working as Tampa Bay's slot corner, but he may find himself with a more dynamic role in 2024. It's unclear if the Buccaneers have someone else in mind to handle slot duties this upcoming season, or if they just want to see if Izien could also help bolster their depth at safety as well.
Gholston re-signed with the Buccaneers on Monday, Jenna Laine of ESPN.com reports. Gholston will remain in Tampa Bay in 2024 for what will be his 12th season in the league. The 32-year-old played a career-low 234 snaps on defense last season, recording zero sacks for the second consecutive year, although he did log his first career interception. He'll likely remain a depth option on the edge for the Buccaneers in 2024.
Gregory agreed to a one-year deal with the Buccaneers on Wednesday, Scott Smith of the team's official site reports. Gregory will reunited in Tampa with outside linebackers coach George Edwards, whom the 2015 second-round pick played for while both were with the Cowboys. The addition of the 31-year-old will bolster Tampa Bay's edge rotation, with Gregory coming off a 2023 regular season in which he recorded 20 tackles and 3.5 sacks in 16 games between the Broncos and 49ers.
Thomas (hamstring) is signing a one-year contract with the Buccaneers on Monday, Greg Auman of Fox Sports reports. Thomas spent the last three seasons in Houston, with his 2023 campaign cut short after suffering a hamstring injury in Week 14. The veteran corner is expected to compete for the nickel job and contribute on special teams, according to Auman.
