The official Twitter account of the president of the United States on Wednesday retweeted a post of Donald Trump’s attacking Nordstrom for dropping his daughter’s clothing and accessories line.

This comes a week after Nordstrom announced it would no longer be selling Ivanka Trump’s products, though they have stated that this was simply because the line was not selling well and not for any political reasons. President Trump said on his personal account today that his daughter has been treated “so unfairly” by the department store chain.

Soon after, Trump’s Nordstrom post was retweeted by the @POTUS account, the official Twitter handle of the president that was formerly used by Barack Obama’s administration mainly to share updates about the White House’s daily activities. This retweet raised further concerns about Trump taking actions as president based on his business interests, in this case using his massive platform to lash out at an American company for their dealings with his daughter, who is the executive vice president of the Trump Organization.

When asked about this tweet during the daily White House press briefing, Press Secretary Sean Spicer said that “the president has every right as a father to stand up for [his children].”

Democratic Senator Bob Casey responded to Trump’s original tweet by tagging the Office of Government Ethics.

Casey was not the only one to see an issue with this; the tweet sparked an immediate backlash, with director Ava DuVernay and actor Ron Howard weighing in.

The @POTUS Twitter account has retweeted virtually every single post Donald Trump has made since his inauguration. In fact, a substantial percentage of the account’s posts are simply retweets of content from Trump’s personal account. It was thought that Trump would likely abandon his @realdonaldtrump Twitter handle after he entered the Oval Office, but instead, he has continued to operate his account exactly as he did during the campaign, frequently using it to lash out at specific people and organizations that he doesn’t like.

This @POTUS account is managed by Dan Scavino Jr., director of social media for the White House, who also retweeted the Nordstrom post on his personal account.

As noted in the bio of the @POTUS account, tweets by Trump himself will be signed “-DJT.” However, that has only happened a handful of times, and in several cases, those tweets are just word-for-word copies of posts from the @realdonaldtrump account.

This is not the first time Trump has called out a specific American business on his Twitter account. Last month, L.L. Bean was being boycotted because Linda Bean, heiress to the company, had donated to Donald Trump during his presidential campaign. After Linda Bean went on Fox News and defended Trump, the then president-elect tweeted that his followers should “Buy L.L. Bean”

Critics were quick to point out that the Office of Government Ethics prohibits executive officials from endorsing any organizations or products.
