When you’re the starting quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys, your love life is a huge topic of conversation no matter who you’re dating. But few players in NFL history have had their love lives play out in public more than Tony Romo, whose past girlfriends include Carrie Underwood and Jessica Simpson.
Things didn’t work out with Underwood or Simpson, but Romo is now happily married to another high-profile woman: Former beauty queen and TV reporter Candice Crawford. Watch the video above to get Candice’s insight on her husband’s career.
Read on for more about Candice and her relationship with the Cowboys’ signal-caller.
1. She Met Romo When She Was a Dallas TV Reporter
Tony and Candice began dating in 2009, shortly after the QB broke up with Simpson. At the time, Candice was a reporter and anchor at CW33 in Dallas, where she covered high school sports and hosted a daily lifestyle segment.
In 2011, after Romo had proposed to Candice, Candice left the station to prepare for the couple’s wedding.
Dallas media reporter Ed Bark reported at the time of her departure that she hoped to return to TV some day, but not with CW33.
2. She’s a Former Miss Missouri & Miss USA Contestant
Candice, 27, grew up in Lubbock, Texas (home to Texas Tech University) and began competing in beauty pageants when she was a teenager, competing in the Miss Texas Teen USA pageants in 2003 and 2005.
She went on to attend the University of Missouri, and while a student at Mizzou, she won the Miss Missouri pageant in 2008, earning a bid to compete in the Miss USA pageant, in which she finished in the top 10.
These days, Candice is working on “Hawk + Sloane,” a company she started with middle school friend Holly Siglin. After the friends both had the same due date for their first sons, they decided to use the names for the company. Hawk + Sloane produces essential oil sprays that help parents and children, whether it’s for sleeping, soothing, or just eliminating odors.
3. Her Brother, Chase Crawford, Starred on Gossip Girl & Used to Date Carrie Underwood
Prior to her career as a beauty queen and TV personality and her relationship with Romo, Candice wasn’t close to the most well-known person in her family. That distinction went to her older brother, Chase, an actor who starred on Gossip Girl and who — like Romo — used to date Carrie Underwood.
People Magazine reported that in 2008, Chase was there cheering on his sister at the Miss USA pageant:
While the TV star wasn’t wearing an oversized pin on his lapel like the rest of his family, Crawford’s support was more vocal. When it was announced that his younger sister made it to the Top 10, Crawford threw his arms in the air, stood up and shouted in celebration.
4. Tony Proposed to Candice on Her 24th Birthday
Romo popped the question in 2010 as Candice was celebrating her 24th birthday with her family. The two were married during the NFL lockout in 2011 in a ceremony attended by the likes of Cowboys icons Troy Aikman and Roger Staubach and owner Jerry Jones.
Pepople has the details on the engagement ring and ceremony:
She received an 8-carat yellow diamond engagement ring, which features one carat of round diamonds surrounding the center stone. Her bridesmaids wore Badgley Mischka dresses.
Guests partied into the night at a reception organized by wedding planner Todd Fiscus, whose credits include New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning’s wedding. Short ribs and pizza were promised on the new couple’s reception menu.
“We did lots of man food,” Fiscus told CBS about the menu for the big day. “I have a lot of football players to feed.”
5. Tony & Candice Have 2 Sons
About five months after the wedding, the Romos announced that Candice was pregnant with the couple’s first child. Hawkins Crawford Romo was born on April 9, 2012. Hawkins’ younger brother, Rivers, was born on March 18, 2014.
