When the Chicago Cubs stunned the baseball world by prying Kyle Tucker away from the Houston Astros last offseason, the message was clear: they were all-in on winning right now.

Six months later, that bet is paying off — for the moment anyway. Tucker’s bat has helped keep the Cubs atop the National League Central, playing a key role in an offense that has been among the highest scorers in the league all season.

But the bigger question in Wrigleyville isn’t about Tucker’s next swing — it’s about his next contract, and whether the Cubs boxed themselves in by going for broke. After all, blockbuster trades only work if the star doesn’t just walk away one season later.

So when Tucker dropped an interesting hint recently about what could be coming next, some fans took notice.

Kyle Tucker Sparks Hope With Talk About Future of Cubs Organization

Speaking to reporters in St. Louis amid a series against the Cardinals, Tucker made it clear that he’s been taking notes about what’s going on throughout the entire Cubs organization.
And perhaps more importantly, Tucker indicated that he likes what he has seen.

“I think there’s a good foundation here for success, not just this year, but afterwards,” he said.

“I always see our rankings for our minor leaguers and all the prospects and stuff. I obviously haven’t played with a whole lot of them, or know them that well, but we got a lot of young guys here that have played really well, and I think they’re just going to continue that throughout their careers.”

Certainly not as powerful as putting his signature on a contract, but Tucker sounds like someone who is enjoying his time in Chicago. He has certainly given Cubs fans plenty to cheer about, slashing .291/.396/.537 with 17 home runs, 52 RBIs and 20 stolen bases.

But judging the Tucker trade is also about the pieces that went the other way, and it would seem that the Astros are pretty happy with how things have turned out. While pitcher Hayden Wesneski was lost for the season after undergoing Tommy John surgery, the other players acquired by Houston have contributed mightily to the team currently leading the AL West by 6.5 games.

Third baseman Isaac Paredes is slashing .254/.360/.471, with 17 home runs and 46 RBIs, but 22-year-old Cam Smith is the real prize of the deal for the Astros. After making his major league debut in the season opener, Smith got off to a slow start, but he has posted a slash line of .393/.460/.661 over the past 15 games and looks every bit like a first-round draft pick. In the first two games of the Cubs’ weekend series at Houston, Smith has gone 4-for-6 with two home runs and five RBIs, making Aldo Soto of FanSided wonder if the Cubs front office is taking a look in the mirror.

“The Cubs certainly don’t regret trading for Tucker, needing a legit star to plug into their lineup in 2025,” Soto wrote. “However, Jed Hoyer has to be re-thinking his decision to include Smith in the blockbuster trade because halfway through this year Smith is decisively the most surprising part of the deal.”

Kyle Tucker Megadeal Could Limit Team Resources for Rest of Roster

Ultimately, Cubs fans will grade the trade based on what happens this October, and the offseason to follow. But even if Tucker does sign an extension to remain in Chicago, what could that mean down the road?

Prevailing opinion is that the 28-year-old Tucker will be the next player to sign a contract for at least $500 million, and such a megadeal could put a tight squeeze on who the team can afford to fill out the rest of the roster. As Ken Rosenthal suggests in The Athletic, putting $50 million or more annually toward Tucker could impact other teammates coming up on free agency such as Ian Happ, Seiya Suzuki, Nico Hoerner, and Jameson Taillon.

So the Cubs may have painted themselves into a corner — a playoff hopeful with a star worth keeping and a roster that could be boxed in by the same blockbuster trade that made this possible in the first place.
