The Atlanta Falcons hired Matt Ryan as President of Football after interviewing Detroit Lions COO Mike Disner.

For weeks, the Atlanta Falcons have been quietly reassessing everything — how decisions are made, how accountability is structured, and why progress on the field has remained elusive. Owner Arthur Blank brought in consulting firm Sportology to conduct a full organizational health check, signaling that meaningful change — not cosmetic tweaks — was on the table.

That process created a natural question inside the building and around the league: who would ultimately be trusted to help guide the franchise forward?

Falcons Officially Name Matt Ryan President of Football

On Jan. 10, the Falcons answered that question, officially naming Matt Ryan as president of football and placing him in charge of the organization’s football operations.

Ryan, the franchise’s longtime quarterback and most recognizable player, emphasized both the emotional and professional weight of the move.

“Arthur gave me the chance of a lifetime almost twenty years ago, and he’s done it again today,” Ryan said, per Marc Raimondi. “While I appreciate the time I had with the Colts and with CBS, I’ve always been a Falcon. It feels great to be home. I could not be more excited, grateful, or humbled by this new opportunity. I began my career with a singular goal: to do right by the Blank family, the Falcons organization, the City of Atlanta, and especially our fans. My commitment to the success of this franchise has not changed. I’m beyond ready to help write a new chapter of excellence.”

The hire formalizes weeks of speculation following Sportology’s evaluation and reflects a shift toward centralized leadership after years of fragmented decision-making. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that trust was a central factor in the decision.

“In Matt Ryan, Falcons owner Arthur Blank is giving the Falcons football operation to someone he trusts implicitly,” Fowler wrote.

Fowler added that Atlanta is expected to prioritize its head coaching search first, given the number of openings across the league, while taking a more deliberate approach to hiring a general manager.

Ryan acknowledged that the transition from player and analyst to executive comes with a learning curve.

“I also recognize this side of football is not where I’ve come up,” Ryan said. “I’ve played, I’ve commented, but I haven’t directly operated. I think I’m humble enough to recognize there will be some baptism by fire, but I’m ready for that. I know I’ve got great resources and partners throughout this organization and I’m fortunate to have mentors across the league. That said, I do understand the weight of a role like this — I’ve lived it. I have confidence in the perspective my years as a player and a team leader give me. This is not a new table; it’s just a new seat.”

Ryan Dives Immediately Into Falcons Coaching Search

That new seat comes with immediate responsibility. According to SI’s Albert Breer, Ryan begins his tenure by stepping directly into the Falcons’ head coaching search, with interviews scheduled Friday for Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak and Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver.

Ryan will also be heavily involved in Atlanta’s general manager search, though league expectations are that the coaching hire will come first.

For a franchise that has lacked a clear identity in recent seasons, Ryan’s elevation represents a philosophical reset. This isn’t a ceremonial return or advisory role. He now holds real authority — and real accountability — over how the Falcons build, lead, and compete.

Whether that gamble pays off will define the next era of Falcons football. But after years of drifting, Atlanta has placed its future in the hands of someone who understands the pressure, expectations, and weight of the job — because he’s lived it before.
