A Bo Bichette or Kyle Tucker decision could be coming soon.
The Toronto Blue Jays face a crucial offseason. They seek to retain and add star talent after a thrilling 2025 campaign. Central is Bo Bichette, the two-time All-Star shortstop and one of Toronto’s most consistent offensive forces since 2019. Kyle Tucker is another name who has been heavily linked to the Blue Jays. Alex Bregman was also a consideration before the infielder signed with the Chicago Cubs.
New reports from MLB insiders on Bichette and Tucker suggest that signing at least one of them will not be straightforward. In fact, one potential replacement for Bichette (who holds a home run record) can be scratched off the list of hopefuls. However, there is hope that Toronto’s aggressive pursuit of Tucker will pay off, despite one team offering game-changing money.
Bo Bichette’s Meeting With the Philadelphia Phillies
Bichette’s meeting with the Philadelphia Phillies reportedly went “very well,” according to insider Jon Heyman.
“Bichette/Phillies meeting is said to have gone very well fwiw,” Heyman wrote on January 13th, 2026. “Bichette admires “first class” organization. Other pluses: roster, park, Mattinglys link, spring proximity to home. Would Phils need to deal Bohm, do lesser C than JT? Other Bo suitors: Jays, Red Sox, NYY, LAD, more.”
Heyman wasn’t the only insider to reveal a positive outcome from the Bichette-Phillies meeting.
“Source confirms the meeting with the Phillies and Bo Bichette over Zoom yesterday was a very good one,” John Clark of NBC Philadelphia wrote on X on January 13th. “I’m told the Phillies’ interest in Bo is ‘genuine,’ and he is also interested in the Phils. The relationship with Bo and Don Mattingly is important It was a very good get to know you meeting for both sides.”
In 2025, Bichette hit .311 with 18 home runs and 94 RBIs over 139 games, finishing near the top of the American League batting leaderboard. His career batting average stands just under .300.
He has consistently provided a blend of contact ability and emerging power since becoming the Jays’ everyday shortstop.
Boston Red Sox Linked to Kyle Tucker?
Meanwhile, another intriguing twist comes from the Boston Red Sox. According to another analyst, they have prioritized signing outfielder Tucker over Bichette.
“Fwiw, I’ve been told all offseason that the pivot from Bregman would be Tucker, not Bichette,” Cead Mile Failte wrote on X on January 10th, 2026. “I don’t believe we’re about to sign Tucker, but that is what I’ve been told from multiple people.”
This shift in target preference reflects Boston’s valuation of Tucker’s blend of power and on-base skills within its roster build.
Tucker, 28, is coming off a strong 2025, slashing .266/.377/.464 with 22 homers and 73 RBIs. A two-time Silver Slugger and Gold Glove winner, Tucker provides consistent offense and strong outfield defense, making him one of the most coveted free agents.
New York Mets Make Aggressive Offer to Tucker
Not to be counted out, the New York Mets are also in the middle of this saga. Robert Murray of FanSided revealed that the Mets have made Tucker a $50 million-per-year offer. Murray reports that the offer is tagged as “short-term.”
Not to be counted out, the Blue Jays reportedly have a long-term offer on the table, as Jesse Rogers of ESPN reports.
This doesn’t signal bad news for the Blue Jays at this point. It comes down to a matter of preference. Does Tucker want the long-term security offered by the Blue Jays? Or, does he want to cash in now on a short-term offer from the Mets (or even the Los Angeles Dodgers)?
One report indicates that the Mets are prepared to offer a four-year deal, worth a cool $200 million.
Luckily for baseball fans, a decision could be coming very soon on Tucker, according to Will Sammon of The Athletic.
“Multiple industry sources suggested that a decision from Tucker, who turns 29 on Saturday, could come as early as this week,” Sammon wrote on January 13, 2026. “The Mets are at least demonstrating effort and interest. They held multiple video meetings with Tucker within the last week, league sources said.”
Additionally, Jeff Passan believes the Dodgers are unlikely to be aggressive in pursuing Tucker. This should pay big dividends for the Blue Jays. Toronto’s aggressive long-term offer should be a top consideration for the slugger free agent.
More Moves Coming For the Blue Jays?
For the Blue Jays, missing out on both Bichette and Tucker would be a significant loss. Bichette’s contact ability and knack for multi-hit games helped anchor Toronto’s lineup throughout the 2025 season. Meanwhile, Tucker’s power and on-base skills would provide a complementary bat to Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and other key Blue Jays contributors.
Toronto has already invested heavily in pitching this offseason, adding Dylan Cease, Tyler Rogers, and Cody Ponce (among others). While they have already added Kazuma Okamoto, landing one of Bichette or Tucker would be the icing on the cake that all Toronto fans want to see.
